This is a serious tweet on Silent Sam. If the law allows it to be relocated within the jurisdiction, and the jurisdiction here is the UNC-CH campus, why can’t the campus be expanded ?(continued) /1
The NCSU campus was expanded in the 1980s as the Council of State REALLOCATED part of DHHS Dix property to NCSU on recommendation of Governor Hunt. It’s now part of NCSU campus. /2
There are already parts of @unc Campus not contiguous — Horace Williams Airport and Mason Farm /Finley Golf Course /3
Why couldn’t Governor and Council of State reallocate part of one of the Civil War Historic sites to @unc and move the statue there? It would be in the same jurisdiction. /4
I can’t imagine any workable or tolerable solution that involves a monument to treason, slavery, and the Lost Cause (under the facade of a particular imaginary soldier) being relocated back to what we NOW see as the @UNC campus /5
Obviously making part of a historic site in another county part of campus so as to legally move Silent Sam there means that @UNC and its donors will bear some of the $$$ to continue historic preservation. /6
A better solution of course is to change the 2015 law that put @unc in a straight-jacket. /7
