Not sure why should it affect 'output' sound. Here, try this -

1. Connect Bluetooth headphones to Mac (Mojave. High Sierra?).
2. Play something nice on iTunes.
3. Open 'System Preferences' > 'Sound' > 'Input'.
4. And it's shitting in your ears.

5. Select Bluetooth headphone for sound input. Output sound is all good if you select 'Internal Microphone'.
Why would 'output' of Bluetooth headphone get affected because of what 'Input' you're choosing?
Again, if you simply connect same Bluetooth headphone via a wired connection, doesn't make any difference in the Output.
