I’m a member of DSA and have a lot of hope for the future of socialism but we’ve got to center a radical anti-racist approach if we want our movement to be anything other than a different version of white supremacy.
It’s been extremely disheartening, to say the least, that anti-racism and intersectionality are cast aside as liberal ideologies by some purists within the org, including in my local chapter.
Seattle DSA hosted an excellent anti-oppression training by @AFROSOCDSA this summer but it was optional — we need more trainings like this and it should be mandatory for all members. This won’t derail our movement, it’ll make it stronger and more viable.

I’m seeing way too many white people critiquing Native American intellectuals for their continued calls for @ewarren to do better. You are extremely in the wrong on this issue and here’s why. A thread.
Yes, Warren has issued some soft apologies for claiming Native identity and then trying to prove it with a DNA test. But the harmful “evidence” and defenses are still up on her website.
And once she takes that down, her apologies need to be the start of a conversation — not the end of one. And this is not “just a Native issue.” White feminists striving for intersectionality should be paying attention here too.

Important b/c D’Souza not only mangles the history. He has a fals view of what a political party is. Parties, especially in the U.S., are coalitions -- meaning they bring together people who disagree, but who choose to set aside those disagreements. 2/x

I am left. I've spent my entire adult life in progressive spaces. My husband is Jewish, born in Israel but lived in NYC since aged 6. Also of the left. It's our tribe, how we met, who our friends are, where we live. It's not where we feel welcome any longer. /1
My husband has lived with antisemitism all his life. He has been bullied, beaten, stabbed by antisemites. His experiences informed his activism. Yet antisemitism is ancient and embedded and it stalked him, even amongst friends. /2
A trade union activist once confessed to him that he “never met a Jew that wasn’t a capitalist”. A colleague once confided that he “never thought we’d ever have a Jew, let alone an Israeli Jew working here”. /3

My #BlackHistoryMonth story:

In February of my senior year of high school, there was a Black History Month presentation scheduled. But attendance was optional.

The optional attendance policy upset the black students in the school. They staged a walkout during the lunch periods.
My 4th period class -- lunch periods shared the same time slots as 4th period classes -- was all white students, so we sat in our room during the walkout, which I think we could see from our window. None of us kids really understood why the walkout was occurring.
After all, it was a Black History Month presentation, so why should everyone have to attend it, instead of just students who were interested in Black History (whatever that meant), of whatever race? The attitude in the room was one of mainly confusion.

One of the annoying things about conversations around Intersectionality is that there are so many people calling themselves intersectional feminists who literally do not understand that the outline of intersectional feminist was started to specifically speak about black women
And if you're confused, PLEASE read the source. Kimberle Crenshaw discusses the various ways, in which, the legal system argued against the idea that black women can experience both sexism and racism. She even points out the racist past of the Feminism

It's a little ironic to me how the work of black women is used as an outline for so many people's activism and yet they erasure the contributions of them. This is why things like Womanism exist, because in large scale feminist movements, the work of Black Women is erased.
