I just learned that writer Emeka Walter Dinjos passed on December 12th from diabetes complications. He was the 1st Nigerian winner of the Writers of the Future Contest and he was only 34 years old. I'm heartbroken and stunned. 😢🇳🇬🖋️

Back when Who Fears Death came out, African scholars criticized me for portraying female general mutilation in a room with lights and technology. Just read an article complaining about my unique portrayal of Himba people in Binti.

Both of these books are set in the FAR FUTURE.
Yes, Africa has futures and yes I’m free to explore them.
Also, culture is alive, not petrified. It grows, shrinks, molts, sheds, and once in a while even dies.

I was thinking. There's probably a lot of #writers that really want to get involved in the #WritingCommunity , but maybe don't know how or feel a little lost. So I decided to create a little guide on Book Twitter to go over the basics for anyone who needs it! A thread.
Common writing age-group acronyms:
MG = Middle Grade
YA = Young Adult
NA = New Adult (you may see a little conflict over this topic, so be wary. To quickly summarize, it's an age group between YA and A that typically depicts people between 18 - 30)
A = Adult
Common writing terms:
Beta Reader = Someone who reads and gives you feedback on the early drafts of your story. They read bc they enjoy.
CP/Critique Partner = A partnership where you read their story and they read yours for feedback.
1st, 2nd (X)st draft = stages of editing

Separated family reunions continue in NK at a resort in Mt. Kumgang. This centenarian (101) from SK met his daughter-in-law (71) and granddaughter from NK for the first time. What about his son? Well, his son in NK already passed away: he was pushing 80.

Another near-centenarian: this grandma from SK clad in green (right) is 99 years old. She got to meet her 2 daughters living in NK for the first time since being separated during the Korean War.

Nigerian's love the noise.Follow the signal. Tune out the noise. This is less sexy than glamours premieres and everyone talking about your movie. Most of these cinema movies you reference have their investors nursing massive losses. Like 100%. Real talk, I know the numbers
The only reason this isn't widely known is Nollywood primarily attracts vanity investors. There I said it, in 2015 @irokotv lost $120k on a cinema movie Never again. Every ROK produced movie has been profitable since. 100% hit rate. No glitz, no glamour. Just sauce. Hot sauce.
There still remains a problem in distribution investment for Nollywood. Everything is inadequate. Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying. VCD/Video club which was the old economic driver of Nollywood profits died in 2013. I wrote about it 5 years ago. jason.com.ng/alabanomics-ye…

#Writers! There's no #writingtip, blog post, book, or class that will save you from having to work hard. Those are all tools.

They're your boots, your backpack, and your bottle of water. They aid you on your journey, but you're still the one who has to do the walking.

And it can be a lonely road. So find a community to share your troubles with. Lots of people have walked the road before you, and many will be happy to guide you.

Many #writers wander into the craft with an idealistic mindset. I know I did. I thought it would be easy.

It's not easy. It takes hard work and and lots of failure. It takes being knocked down and getting back up. It takes time.

But think about it. If it were quick and easy, what would be the point?

The value lies in the challenge.

I'm reasonably certain (because they've told it to my face before) that there are plenty of people who just think I'm a nasty bad hypocrite, and that I should shut up, because I'm harshing their squee.

1) Perhaps I shouldn't be bothered by the screeching of those ill equipped to deal with reality, but sometimes I fail to rise above it all. So, after this latest gen from Chelsea Handler, let me address something about her and people like her
2) In all real honesty, Chelsea Handler is a nobody. She's a washed up comedienne who's entire career has been careening from one mess to another. She can't act for beans, and most of her roles involve her spouting incomprehensible vulgarity
