Back when Who Fears Death came out, African scholars criticized me for portraying female general mutilation in a room with lights and technology. Just read an article complaining about my unique portrayal of Himba people in Binti.

Both of these books are set in the FAR FUTURE.
Yes, Africa has futures and yes I’m free to explore them.
Also, culture is alive, not petrified. It grows, shrinks, molts, sheds, and once in a while even dies.
This is off topic, but I’ll say it anyway: Not all African narratives need to centralize death/disease/war/problems.

Oftentimes, I mention a story set in an African country and here comes someone yabbing about problems of that country before I’ve even spoken. 😑
“Genital”, not “general”. Sigh. I swear, autocorrect strikes AS I’m clicking “tweet”. Mschew.
