CHARLES'S RECOMMENDATION EXTRAVAGANZA

To close out 2018, I will issue one recommendation per vote that this poll receives. Vote for what type of thing you want to hear my opinion on!
BOOK:

IT'S ALIVE: A VISUAL HISTORY OF FRANKENSTEIN, by Elizabeth Campbell Denlinger

A beautiful history of Mary Shelley's creation, with its gothic context, scientific background, and various adaptations through the years.

amazon.com/Its-Alive-Visu…
FILM:

THE DINNER (2017)

Two couples resolutely refuse to enjoy a nice dinner out, and it's unclear why they're all so terrible until flashbacks reveal a horrifying event that they're all trying to erase from memory in one way or another.

imdb.com/title/tt320362…
WILDCARD:

GET A DUVET ONE SIZE BIGGER THAN YOUR BED

There's no law that says you are restricted to having a queen-size duvet for a queen-size bed. Slap a king-size duvet on there, and you'll never have problems with it sliding (OR BEING STOLEN) over to the other side.
MUSIC:

ALICE DONUT - MULE

I was lucky enough to see Alice Donut, a bonkers New York art punk band that formed in 1986, at their only show in 2017. Mule is my favorite album of theirs. Highlight: "Mother of Christ."

WILDCARD:

AVOCADO CO-WASH, by LUSH

I'm not much of a "product" guy, but oh wow did this stuff change my life. My hair is very fine and wants to tangle at the slightest provocation, but a little of this in it makes it silky-smooth. Also THE BEST SCENT.

lushusa.com/hair/shampoo/a…
BOOK:

GEEK LOVE, by Katherine Dunn

Grotesque, heartbreaking, and hilarious, Dunn's novel of a sideshow circus family is not for the squeamish. It's a book I return to again and again for its lyrical beauty and face-slapping honesty.

amazon.com/Geek-Love-Nove…
MUSIC:

EVERYTHING BY SLIM CESSNA'S AUTOCLUB

The greatest live band in the world, like a tent revival in the middle of the apocalypse. Slim, Munly, and the rest of @SlimCessna's Auto Club draw on American religion like no one else.

Start here:

slimcessnasautoclub.bandcamp.com/album/scac-102…
WILDCARD:

AN OLD CAST IRON SKILLET

Get yourself to the antique shops and find a pan, hopefully from Griswold or Wagner, and take the time to prep and season it. I have a 12" pan that I use for almost everything, and I'm not afraid of using soap on it.

sherylcanter.com/wordpress/2010…
BOOK:

VACATIONLAND, by John @Hodgman

A self-described "older white male monster with bad facial hair" confronts being just that. More personal than his earlier, more straightforwardly jokey books, it's a great read for weird dads or anyone with one.

bit.ly/painfulbeaches
WILDCARD:

ONE OF THOSE CHRISTMAS OR HALLOWEEN SWIRLY LIGHT THINGS

They have these things at Home Depot around the holidays to cast swirly lights outside, but you know what? They work pretty great in your living room to give it a soothing atmosphere.
WILDCARD:

A TINY WHITE NOISE MACHINE

This li'l guy sits on the nightstand and puts out PLENTY of fuzz to cover the sounds of the city, plus I can toss it in a bag and it'll have enough charge for at least a weekend in a noisy AirBnB.

amazon.com/gp/product/B01…
MUSIC:

KID CONGO AND THE PINK MONKEYBIRDS - LA ARAÑA ES LA VIDA

Kid Congo (of The Cramps, Gun Club, Bad Seeds) is just a delight of a human being. The spaced out garage rock on this album is a pure distillation of his decades as a music and style icon.

amazon.com/Arana-Vida-CON…
WILDCARD:

COOPER AMERICAN CHEESE

NO WAIT, HEAR ME OUT. Cooper is a processed cheese with a long pedigree--it's aged, so it's sharper that you expect, and it tastes like the essence of cheesiness. It's the perfect ingredient to add creaminess and umami.

coopercheese.com
BOOK:

STANDING AT ARMAGEDDON, by Nell Irvin Painter

Painter's history of the Progressive Era is more timely than ever. The milieu of tensions stemming from race, class, and gender inequities will read as familiar today.

amazon.com/gp/product/039…
FILM/TV:

TASKMASTER (UK)

The creation of comedy genius @AlexHorne, hosted by the wickedly capricious @gdavies. It's hard to find in the states, but if you do, it's the funniest thing on TV in years. Pointless challenges done as if they were significant.

WILDCARD:

GET TO KNOW YOUR MAIL CARRIER

Thank your regular mail carrier for their work. If you're lucky, they'll be open to talking about how to solve any mail problems you might have. No more stolen packages from my stoop! This is also the time of year to give them a tip.
BOOK:

THE CITY AND THE CITY, by China Miéville

While Miéville's Bas Lag books are some of the best weird fantasy for their political and economic overtones, this taut murder mystery set in two overlapping but mutually exclusive cities is a great read.

amazon.com/City-Novel-Ran…
BOOK:

THE NEVERENDING STORY, by Michael Ende

Ok, you've seen the film, but it's only the first third or so of this amazing book, which does not in fact culminate in Bastian scaring bullies with the luckdragon.

Spoiler: Atreyu is green.

amazon.com/Neverending-St…
BOOK:

WE HAVE A RELIGION, by @TisaWenger

Focusing on one case--the US suppressing the Pueblo dance ceremony in the 20s--Wenger illuminates what "religion" has meant in the US over a much broader swath of time. Crucial to understanding why we define.

amazon.com/We-Have-Religi…
FILM/TV

RARE EXPORTS: A CHRISTMAS TALE (2010)

When archaeologists unearth Santa in Finland, havoc ensues. Utterly bonkers.

imdb.com/title/tt140114…
BOOK:

THE REMAINS OF THE DAY, by Kazuo Ishiguro

A beautiful and frustrating little novel about a holdout butler as his household declines in the interwar years. The connection between the two wars becomes integral to the plot and the character study.

amazon.com/Remains-Day-Ka…
FILM/TV:

HOTEL BEAU SÉJOUR (2017)

Dutch-language Belgian TV has an impressively good hit-rate. This murder mystery in which a young woman investigates a murder that hits VERY close to home is a great example.

netflix.com/title/80114919
WILDCARD:

RULE OF THREE (podcast)

Equal parts funny and informative, @ruleofthreepod invites a funny person on to talk about a specific work of comedy (mostly British). They break down how comedy works without robbing it of its power to make us laugh.

ruleofthreepod.com
WILDCARD:

J.R. WATKINS ALOE & GREEN TEA DISH SOAP

You know how your kitchen sponge gets gross and smelly? I've been using this soap for years and now my sponges are odor-free up to the point that they're falling apart from use. Seriously, this is magic.

jrwatkins.com/products/dish-…
WILDCARD:

GO TO AN INTERNATIONAL GROCERY STORE AND TRY STUFF

It is a simple joy to pick out foodstuffs you've never tried (and maybe never seen) before, and discover what you've been missing in someone else's normal.
FILM/TV:

INSIDE NO. 9 (2014-)

A perfect anthology horror/black comedy series from @SP1nightonly and @ReeceShearsmith, who play with and in the genre as virtuosos. Twists upon twists in every episode.

imdb.com/title/tt267480…
MUSIC:

ZEAL & ARDOR - STRANGER FRUIT

As a historian, I'm conflicted about some aspects of this band, including the album title, but the question its music answers--what if the worship and music of enslaved Africans were directed at Satan--is intriguing.

zealandardor.bandcamp.com/album/stranger…
BOOK:

NEXUS, by @Ramez Naam

Naam's trilogy about a technology that allows for extremely radical empathy is a fast-paced thriller. but it also examines how various cultures might make us of or abuse such a tech. It's a "big idea" novel that really works.

amazon.com/Nexus-Arc-Book…
BOOK:

GOSPEL ACCORDING TO THE KLAN, by @kelly_j_baker

One of my bugbears is people calling Christians whose theology they don't like "fake Christians." Baker shows how the KKK were part of mainstream US Protestantism. There are *many* Christianities.

amazon.com/Gospel-Accordi…
WILDCARD:

GLASS STRAWS

While they're not a suitable replacement for disposable plastic for people with certain disabilities, glass straws are really pleasant to drink from if that's not a concern. Make sure to get a cleaning brush that will fit!

amazon.com/gp/product/B01…
WILDCARD:
SPECIAL FOR THE DUDES:

A PURSE

Don't call it a manbag; that's dumb and sexist. Just accept that it's really great to carry around a small receptacle in addition to your pockets.

But also recognize your pocket privilege and work for equality.

farhorizontraders.com/collections/ca…
N.B. If you get a camelskin purse, you're in for a lot of deodorizing to remove the camel stank.

Stuff it full of dryer sheets, condition the hell out of the leather, and shut it up in a container with a bunch of activated charcoal.

And commit to referring to it as a purse.
BOOK:

A WAR FOR THE SOUL OF AMERICA, by @HartmanAndrew

A second edition is on its way because history has a way of refusing to stop, and the culture wars are--though taking different forms--not a thing of a past. An important book to contextualize now.

amazon.com/War-Soul-Ameri…
BOOK:

GORMENGHAST (trilogy), by Mervyn Peake

Peake crams so much wonder into the setting (an ancient and labyrinthine castle) and the oddball cast of characters that these books almost don't need a plot. Turns out that they've got a great one!

amazon.com/Gormenghast-No…
BOOK:

A HERO OF OUR TIME, by Mikhail Lermontov

If you read one 19th century Russian novel, this might be it. A classic of the "superfluous man" archetype, with duels, kidnappings, and mental handwringing. Nabokov's translation is excellent.

amazon.com/Hero-Our-Time-…
BOOK:

MEMORY OF FIRE (trilogy), by Eduardo Galeano

A retelling of the brutal transformation of the Americas in brief vignettes, poems, and dialogues. Galeano pulled no punches with this lyrical history.

amazon.com/Genesis-Memory…
WILDCARD:

GRITTY
MUSIC:

HARRY DEAN STANTON - PARTLY FICTION

Recorded during the filming of the documentary about Stanton by the same name, these are songs that he would just pick up his guitar and play with a sweet wistfulness that a long life gave him.

amazon.com/Partly-Fiction…
BOOK:

JONATHAN STRANGE & MR. NORRELL, by Susanna Clarke

Clarke's prose is so beautiful, and the worlds she creates are so rich, that I didn't want the book to end. The best "history, but with magic," which is a very difficult needle to thread well.

amazon.com/Jonathan-Stran…
FILM/TV

CREEP & CREEP 2 (2014 & 2017)

Mark Duplass is *chef-finger-kiss* in this pair of films about a VERY unreliable narrator. It plays on our desire to make everything be ok, even when others are doing everything they can to make that impossible.

imdb.com/title/tt242817…
BOOK:

STRANGERS IN THE LAND, by John Higham

This is a crucial book for my own work, as well as an enduring introduction to the mechanisms and motivations of American nativism.

amazon.com/Strangers-Land…
BOOK:

MANLINESS & CIVILIZATION, by Gail Bederman

In so many ways, the turn of the 20th century was a turning point for masculinities, and Bederman illuminates how race, class, and ideas of the nation were intertwined in this era of change.

amazon.com/Manliness-Civi…
FILM/TV

W1A

This mockumentary workplace comedy follows a ragtag team of BBC employees trying to shape the network's values for the future. The dialogue goes beyond snappy--a completed sentence is a rarity here. Like The Office minus Gervais.

netflix.com/title/80068326
BOOK:

JENNIFER GOVERNMENT, by @MaxBarry

A clever extreme-corporate dystopia, in which government is privatized--if you want a murder solved, better come up with the cash for the investigation budget. As her employer, Government is Jennifer's surname.

amazon.com/Jennifer-Gover…
BOOK:

THE MASTER AND MARGARITA, by Mikhail Bulgakov

Perhaps the finest novel ever written, in which the devil comes to town, the crucifixion gets complicated, and witches run rampant. Plus, a giant cat! I like the linked translation:

amazon.com/Master-Margari…
BOOK:

STAMPED FROM THE BEGINNING, by @DrIbram X. Kendi

By taking the deep corpus of anti-black ideas seriously, Kendi shows the motives and purpose behind them. Racist ideas produce and uphold racist systems--they are not accidents or simple ignorance.

amazon.com/dp/1568585985/…
MUSIC:

THE VEILS - NUX VOMICA

Smashing record all the way through, with Finn Andrews ranging from animalistic howls to crooning. @TheVeils were one of the bands that played the roadhouse in the new Twin Peaks. Start with "Not Yet":

BOOK:

WISE BLOOD, by Flannery O'Connor

Mummies, self-blindings, the Church Without Christ, a good car--the fact that this incredible novel was published in 1952 counters some conventional wisdom about mid-century American culture.

amazon.com/Wise-Blood-Nov…
BOOK:

THE HEARTS OF MEN, by Barbara Ehrenreich

If you want a good answer to the question "why are men?" @B_Ehrenreich has got you covered. In 1983, she recognized an already-existing trend toward retention of irresponsible, entitled behavior in men.

amazon.com/Hearts-Men-Ame…
FILM/TV:

TICKLED (2016)

This bonkers documentary starts as a light-hearted look at a "competitive tickling" operation, but quickly turns into something much darker. Best to watch it knowing no more than that.

imdb.com/title/tt527850…
BOOK:

CARRION COMFORT, by Dan Simmons

This is an ugly story, but legitimately terrifying. Immortal mind-controlling psychic-vampire Nazi? Yeesh. And Simmons doesn't make the mistake of blaming Naziism on the monster--the monster *uses* the human evil.

amazon.com/Carrion-Comfor…
