Vice's problems aren't that is hilariously conspiratorial and historically illiterate brought on by a blinding raging bias. It's that it's ultimately just boring.
I could watch Christian Bale walk around all day as Dick Cheney and Sam Rockwell isn't getting enough credit as W. But god what a pointless, lifeless exercise.
Making a completely lifeless boring film is infinitely worse than making a biased film.
The funniest part of Vice is when Mary Cheney confesses her homosexuality and three people in the theater all went "oh no". And he hugs her and tells her it's okay and there were audible gasps. Wanted to stand up and cheer.
That's ultimately the problem. There is nothing interesting making a film about someone the audience knows the filmmaker already hates. It's masturbation as entertainment. Trying to find reasons why he's not satan incarnate makes for a way more interesting story.
McKay stumbles into this a couple of times but god it was just so flat.
