A thread: How much cash - actual banknotes - crossed Hong Kong borders in the six months since a money laundering law cracked down on declarations? An insane HK$600billion...ie US$77billion, or, more to the point, 522 billion in Chinese yuan scmp.com/news/hong-kong… via @SCMPNews
So how much is that? In US$100 notes, it would weigh about 770 tonnes. But again, more to the point, it would tip the scales at about 5,300 tonnes in 100 yuan notes
In yuan, that's a 165-truck convoy of 18-wheelers packed to their maximum road capacity of 32 metric tonnes
Or a fleet of 38 Boeing 747s filled to maximum cargo capacity of 140 tonnes each.
Or, in the language familiar to Canadians, 265,000 hockey bags, each stuffed with 20kg of cash.
So, if you ever find yourself struggling with the scale of Chinese money movements, just imagine this: a parade of people moving by at a rate of 1,000 people per hour, each dragging a hockey bag packed with 20kg in cash. That parade would last 11 days.
