1/5/49 at 7:45 pm on WATV. New York City's commercial iteration of pubcaster Channel 13 was showing one of two 1932 releases based on plays by Collison (the other was RED DUST) with Warner as blackmailed DA. From the director of THE VAMPIRE BAT, NY TV debut 9/8/48 on WCBS.
NY TV debut 1/5/54 at 11:15 pm on WCBS' "The Late Show.'' One of a package of British productions (like ANNA KARENINA, from London Films) that Fox retained US rights to. Leased to Unity Television, minus logo with de Fox-ified opening credits. Broadcast in black and white.
NY TV debut 1/5/59 from 7:30 to 9 pm on WOR's "Million Dollar Movie.'' Obviously, Channel 9 was not held to advertised (by TV distributor AAP) 2-showing limit for usual week-long run of 16 broadcasts. Biggest pre-48 WB title to bypass premiere on WCBS repeated on MDM in July.
NY TV debut 1/5/59 at 11:15 pm on WCBS' "The Late Show.'' @leonardmaltin blurbs of Frank Tuttle's 1939 melodrama about ex-con Raft: "Familiar stuff, smoothly done, with appealing performances and standout photography by Milton Krasner. Nathanael West wrote the screenplay.'' MIA.
NY TV debut 1/5/64 at 8 pm on WOR's "The Big Preview.'' Corman's 1957 alien vampire yarn for Allied Artists release, one of his most effective, was remade three times. Films on Channel 9's single-showing showcase usually repeated on "Million Dollar Movie.''
1/5/69 from 11:30 pm to 1:45 am on WNBC's "Film Festival.'' Cut to fit a 2-hour time slot for 3/28/68 US TV premiere on "The CBS Thursday Night Movie,'' 123-minute 1958 classic got a tiny bit more breathing room here, given heavier commercial load for late night movies.
1/5/74 at 11:30 pm on WCBS' "The Late Show.'' NOTHING SACRED (NY TV debut 10/21/44) vanished from the tube in the early '50s, presumably because it was purchased for 1954 gender-bent remake with Jerry in Lombard role. US TV debut 9/13/66 on "NBC Tuesday Night at the Movies.''
1/5/79 on WABC's "4:30 Movie.'' Bernard Herrmann's great score enhances Enfield and Harryhausen's definitive 1961 version of Verne novel, a portion of which was filmed for MGM's trouble-plagued, part-Technicolor, part-talkie released in 1929.
1/5/84 at 3 am on WPIX. NY TV debut 1/28/57 on WOR's "Million Dollar Movie.'' Remake of Bergman's 1936 Swedish film, remade in 1980 as HONEYSUCKLE ROSE. NY TV debut (via NTA) 1/28/57 on WOR's "Million Dollar Movie.'' US Network debut: ABC, 8/25/73. Owned by Disney.
1/5/89 at 4:30 am on "TNT Overnight.'' It's not always possible to precisely pinpoint TV premieres. Earliest New York City listing I can find for Conway's 1931 Haines comedy is 8/17/65 on WNBC's "Great Great Show.'' Listed in Times as a repeat, which may or may not not be true.
1/5/94 at 7:15 am on AMC. One of nine 1939 releases for neglected character great Hohl, who even makes it into the poster. RKO promoted still-extant (at 95!) Lydon as "the next Mickey Rooney.'' Brodel was rechristened Joan Leslie for HIGH SIERRA (1941).
1/5/99 at 7:30 am on TCM. 1940 biopic with Hopkins portraying Mrs. Leslie Carter, whose final screen performance was in ROCKY MOUNTAIN MYSTERY (Paramount, 1935), an underseen Zane Grey adaptation starring Randolph Scott and Ann Sheridan that I introduce on the Roan Group DVD.
