I'm very troubled by our obsession with "interventions".

Eg in my field (workers' rights in global supply chains), there is much more attention to the Bangladesh Accord (a Western multi-stakeholder initiative), than organised labour in Bangladesh, or MNCs' corporate impunity.
If u search for research & policy responses to Rana Plaza (killed >1000 garment workers), u'll get blinkered & trapped by tunnel vision preoccupation with our intervention.

Neglecting how we might get our own houses in order, & labour organising/ regulatory capture in Bangladesh
This breeds group-think:

We get boxed into the narrative that we reduce labour repression by interventions "over there"

Even when we consistently find they don't work,
We infer we just need to tinker with the template,

Rather than pursue a radically different response.

Liberals have double the influence, network effects, and people using Reddit.

Which is why Reddit caters to their demands. Same with every other social network.
This is part of the problem for the right. Many conservatives don’t use social networks at all or very little.

Perhaps because most of them are at work, living life, and spending time with their families instead of surfing social media all day.

In the report createlondon.org/wp-content/upl… @OrianBrook @markrt & I look at a variety of data to think about why the cultural sector in the UK is so exclusive. We focus on class, with some intersections of gender and ethnicity, but obviously thats not every form of inequality!
First off we show many cultural occupations are marked by significant inequalities of class, gender & ethnicity, pay gaps based on gender and class, and regional inequalities with London as a major problem for inequality in the sector

Sexual orientation is a strong and exceptionally consistent predictor of social attitudes. I conclude that sexuality should become a core factor in social scientific theory and empirical analysis.
Gender and race were historically marginal topics in sociology, but became core factors in the 1990s

Sexuality is still a marginal topic

Total # of papers in last 80 years in top generalist sociology journals:
Gender: 785
Race: 576
Sexuality: 25
Regardless of whether it's measured as partnering behavior or self-identification, sexuality is a strong predictor of political views.

In fact, sexuality is 2x as strong a divide on general political orientation as gender, race, and college:

So #musicleeds is finishing up. Was in Leeds yesterday, shame I couldn’t stay. Looks like a great day which, in the shadow of the ECoC withdrawal debacle, was a real achievement to make happen.
But with “Music Cities” again being discussed, I want to sound a note of caution. To make the case for some critical reflection. And perhaps to read some of the findings from the last two decades (plus!) of “Creative City” experiences.
So – I don’t normally do this – but here’s a #thread alert.
