Almost forgot to share my first FOIA findings! Not a lot of new info but I think it sheds some light on one of the most shocking claims of Scott & @jonleeanderson's 1986 expose of the World Anti-Communist League — that a contingent of WACL advocated for a US military coup. / 1
In their book's acknowledgments section, the Anderson brothers wrote that the FBI had a "107-page" file on the WACL which they FOIA'd. Of the 43 pages furnished to them, "less than 3 pages of FBI-originating text remained, the rest having been censored and █████ out." / 2
Last summer I put in a FOIA request with the FBI for anything on WACL and learned that in 1978, the legal attache at the US embassy in London forwarded the Bureau a 110-page report on the League (researched over 4 years) by an unidentified influential British individual. / 3
The British source alleged he could "furnish names of every person in the group" and identify the foreign gov's funding it (🇰🇷,🇵🇭,🇹🇭,🇸🇦), and reported that WACL continued to discuss the idea of a US military coup after its 1974 conference in Washington DC. / 4
The legal attache considered him very credible, noting his Whitehall phone number and appearance in the '77 UK issue of "Who's Who." What's more: "He can document everything in his report and it would stand up in a British court..." The attache wrote the FBI with alarm: 📷 / 5
The FBI thought the report was "dubious ... with references to 'the Protocols of the Elders of Zion' and links to the [neo-Nazi] Mexican Secret Society 'Tacos.' [**TECOS!!!**] No action recommended..." Within a yr the FBI's DC field office established a contact at WACL HQ. / 6
"Any actual chance of a coup or terrorist activities are remote," the leg-att noted. "They are most insidious in their efforts for propaganda and lobbying. They want publicity but are terrified of personal publicity." Reagan's election might as well have been a WACL coup. / 7
In 1980 retired Maj. General John Singlaub created the US Council for World Freedom, a new WACL chapter, with financial support from Taiwan's government. In 1984 Singlaub became the chairman of WACL, soon before he started scheming with Oliver North. / 8
Prompted by a request from NATO's director of security for "derogatory information" on the World Anti-Communist League, the FBI affirmed in 1984, "The Bureau has not and is not investigating WACL." 🙈🙉🙊 / 9
BTW: Bill Buckley, McCain Jr & SOMOZA spoke at the 1974 WACL conference in DC where the Confederacion Anti-Comunista Latinoamericana (CAL), a Central American "Death Squad International" according to Scott & Jon Lee Anderson, proposed a military junta take power in the US. / 10
John McCain Jr's speech was followed by the Ukrainian war criminal, Nazi collaborator & WACL architect Yaroslav Stetsko — some 40 yrs before Senator McCain III embraced Stetsko's neo-Nazi ideological successors Oleh Tyahnybok and @AndriyParubiy. /11-end
P.S. This thread is dedicated to @kooleksiy who is investigating links between the far-right in Ukraine and the US today; Scott & @jonleeanderson who wrote "Inside the League"; & @KeithAllenDenn1, who I think I may have inspired to revisit his grad history thesis on WACL (sorry!)
P.P.S. I'll be doing another thread soon about WACL's origins and makeup. Next up: the CIA's Project AERODYNAMIC.
