1/ I’m a bit surprised and disturbed to realize that all my beliefs about purely physical reality map equally well to god
2/ I believe that reality exists, is partially knowable but not completely, and that the better you know it the happier and more effective you are. Just like religious ppl believe about god
3/ I believe that reality has an ultimate destiny (big crunch, infinite expansion, and/or heat death) but that we can’t know or fully comprehend it. And that everything that happens is therefore taking us toward that destiny
4/ I believe that reality works according to underlying principles, though I can’t explain why. And that these principles (like laws or rules) are incredibly elegant and awe-inspiring
5/ Here’s where it gets tricky: although I don’t think reality has a personality, the ultimate destiny + underlying principles look a lot like a “will” if you squint a little. Reality “wants” the universe to go in a certain direction and has many mechanisms to make it happen
6/ Heat death may not seem like a very inspiring destiny, but it is a consistent direction along a heat gradient, and if we can make meaning out of that gradient, that pretty much justifies “everything happens for a reason”
7/ So I’m basically left with the conclusion that I just don’t think reality has a personality, but besides that it’s basically god? Reversing the question, does defining god as “what is” really miss out on anything?
