Now Out in Paperback! “#China Goes to #Sea: #Maritime Transformation in Comparative Historical Perspective”

amazon.com/China-Goes-Sea…

@NavalWarCollege @ChinaMaritime is proud to publish this new version w/ @NavalInstitute @USNIBooks!

Come for the #maps, stay for the #history...
Honored to have #JonathanSpence’s endorsement:

“The maritime #history of #China has long been a neglected field..China Goes to Sea bring[s] that knowledge-gap to an end..will be an indispensable companion to those readers seeking to understand where China’s navy may be heading.”
As European #naval powers & even the @USNavy struggle with ship numbers, #China has gone to #sea.

Represents the reversal of a great historical trend that began 600 years ago, when China withdrew from the seas & European naval expansion spread Western influence around the globe.

As #MedTwitter regulars, you may have already heard that the #SurvivingSepsis Campaign has released the updated 2021 version of the International #Guidelines for Management of #Sepsis and #SepticShock!

But have you gone thru the updates yet?

A #Tweetorial (1/x):
There are 93 #recommendations made in the new publication. I don’t have time to write (or read) that kind of #Tweetorial and neither do you. That’s what the publication is for -> journals.lww.com/ccmjournal/Cit… !

But let’s hit the ✨highlights✨ starring Table 1: (2/x)
Why we care (and we care so much!): Sepsis and septic shock affect millions of people globally each year, and kills somewhere between 1/6 and 1/3 of those diagnosed with the #syndrome. 1/3!!! 😳😢 (3/x)

After ~1975, natural grass field was replaced with artificial grass field in #Hockey

Indians were masters playing on natural grass (8 Golds from 1928-80) but new surface favored physical strength over technicalities.

This was done to curb Indian dominance in Hockey.
India in #Hockey

• Gold (8) - 1928, 1932, 1936, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1964, 1980
• Silver (1) - 1960
• Bronze (3) - 1968, 1972, 2021

Degradation from 1976 onwards (Exception 1980) -
• 5th - 1984
• 6th - 1988
• 7th - 1976, 1992, 2000, 2004
• 8th - 1996, 2016
• 12th - 2012
Spot on for 1980 exception. Countries boycotted 1980 Moscow Olympics are highlighted in this #Map.

This is why #India could win Gold in #Hockey in 1980.

#Story of Lakkasandra lake in #Bengaluru

The thread shows the recent history and transformations it went through over time.

#Map shows the location of lake with an approximate boundary of the plot.
The waterbody in Lakkasandra might have lost its original applications many decades ago and hence revenue maps (given on the left) shows it as a government land but not specifically as a waterbody. Google Maps however shows the waterbody as it was detected in the early 2000s
But the lake seems to have water in many satellite images from 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. It has attributes similar to any seasonal rainfed waterbody in the region

#Elections are supposed to be about electing representations for framing legislations

However the geography behind delimitation which doesnt consider complex socio-economic conditions promote communal polarization leading to deterioration of Democractic values

1/n
Understanding Delmitation:

The constituency delimitation is based on population. and for last delineation exercise, 2001 population was used. Average population was calculated to be 270000 people per constituency

#Map shows Population spread in Tamil Nadu
2/n
To delineate which village/town comes under which constituency, some rules are followed

To achieve the avg population, officials start with headquarters for the constituencies in district & add villages/towns within same or neighbouring taluks(subdistricts) in same district

I’ve shared a collection of 4 @observablehq notebooks about drawing and animating 'waterlines'—an old technique for showing water in maps—in JavaScript

Old + new #dataviz #maps mash-up: a thread

Waterlines are a beautiful feature of western 19th Century maps – ripples or waves radiating out from the coastline

Though they aren’t the only way to draw water – water appears as *so many* different kinds of graphics in maps of the past

#Rampur is the most commonly found name in India as per the Census' village list. #Map shows the villages named Rampur. The name is highly concentrated around UP, Bihar, WB
This is based on what was analysed by @zeusisdead

Underlying data is from @MapMakinMeyers Image
Note: Underlying data is not 100% complete and I didn't intend to add Pura or Puram but there might be a few from Karnataka that might have been shown in map due to data entry errors.

#Map shows the places in India which have "Thiru" in their name. Thiru is a honorific prefix (primarily used in Tamil)

ex: Thiruvananthapuram, Tirupati

Disclaimer: May not be complete. Simple string search done on @osm_in data
Eelam/Lanka names like Trincomalee not shown Image
Similar #Map for places named as "#Gaon"

(or containing the string "gaon" in their name)
Data from @osm_in

If you think it's incomplete, start contributing data in OSM Image
FYI: Tirupati Sarjan Ltd has built some townships etc in Ahmedabad which have the names "Tirupati" in them and hence those dots..

#Map shows #India divided into 4 sections of equal population sorted based on height above mean sea level

Each colour denotes a quarter of India's population

25% of people live at an elevation less than 60m
Another 25% live between 60m & 165m Image
Large Urban Agglomerations in each quadrant:

<60m - Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai

60 to 165m - Kanpur, Lucknow

165 to 321m - Delhi, Nagpur

> 321m - Bengaluru, Hyderabad
If you believe these maps are useless:

The underlying data on population, urban areas, elevation etc. are critical for my researches related to water, urban development in India

I visualize some of the byproducts for both pleasing and influencing perceptions related to these

#Map shows the submarine cable system which are in the ocean floor that is vital for Internet!

Every time we transfer data from an US/international server, that data travels in these cables 1000s of meters below sea surface..

In India cables land primarily in Mumbai & Chennai
This is one reason for storing local audience oriented content in local servers. It can reduce the unnecessary load on the cables and energy requirements.. (Some big companies already do in someway but efficiency is ofcourse required)
Ocean Floor Visual:

These cables are lying in this terrain!
