Pain is a prediction. It’s a cost-benefit analysis:

“What are the odds of survival if I continue taking the actions I’m currently taking?”

If odds of survival decrease, signal pain.

But that means it’s adjustable.

Your beliefs about your survival will influence pain.
If you think you’re going to die, everything is going to hurt a lot more.

Fair enough.

Procrastination too is a prediction of survival.

It says, “There’s complexity here we don’t understand. Stay away, lest you lose your life to variables we cannot predict.”
But there are some emotions that do the opposite.

They ask us to linger. Like beauty.

Sunsets, fires, eyes, and beautiful women all ask us to linger.

Why?

Well if the pattern holds, it’ll be because they all increase our odds of survival in some way.

I think Asian women pretend to cry during sex for the same reason American women suck the air through their lips and make an S sound during sex:

To simulate pain.
I think it’s a form of play and a test of your competence.

Even better if the males can wrestle and show some skill.
I think the sound is also supposed to get men excited too, in the same way the sounds from a pet toy excite a dog.

The toy simulates the sound of prey being killed.

It too, is a form of play, a way for a dog to practice before the real-thing.

What are humans practicing for?

I thought the commercial was funny, because there’s a scene in where a man stops another man from chasing after a girl, suggesting it’s wrong to hit on women in public

and this scene from a movie about the world’s strongest lifters pops up in my head.
In the movie about lifters, you see this massive man (Eddie Hall) just smack his wife on the ass out of nowhere in front of the camera, and she gets a little angry and then starts laughing.

And that’s generally how I’ve seen experiences with women go, to their delight.
So it’s just odd, watching men act like androgynous, virtue-signaling courteous robots, when women don’t even want that from men.

All you have to do is spend like an hour observing men and women to figure that out.

Sometimes when humans feel envious and resentful, they’ll force someone to take skin-in-the-game for a game they were never playing.

Like Mark Zuckerberg.

We crucify him like Christ.

“Take responsibility for your sins MARK!”
Zuckerberg never did anything to me.

It certainly sounds like he did these days.

How much of that outrage stems from people frustrated with modernity and isolation?

Or with social media in general?
Mark absorbs all the anger and outrage of people displeased with social media.

Kind of like how Jeff Bezos absorbs all the ire of people envious of wealthy men.

One has to do the cost benefit analysis of humans and K9s vs other approaches like fences - in some parts, fences may not be possible/suitable. Why Trump brought the military in. We’re already paying them, so why not use them? If that can sustainably work, won’t need any walls.
2. Securing the southern border with troops will cost $3 billion/year ($33 billion by 2030) - that’s on top of the $100 billion that will be spent on border security via CBP by 2030. What will fences and other electronic approaches cost? That’s an analysis public needs to see.
3. There’s no comprehensive analysis on how border security approaches proposed by *either* political party will actually produce more security, ameliorate the humanitarian crisis - no ROI has been shared with the public - so how do taxpayers know this funding won’t be wasted?

Which provides a cost benefit analysis of relationships.

Except the costs are characterized there in terms of pleasure and pain. “Psychic utility,” if you will.

To what extent do these systems of “accounting” relate to each other?

What insights can we get from one notion of costs and benefits that one misses from the other?

Expansion of pipelines using flawed Harper approval process
Expand coal electricity production

As a thought exercise I wrote about everything I changed my mind about this year.

Below are the big things I have learned/changed my mind about in 2018:
Business: people that build something useful that makes a profit without unfairly fucking over others is what to aspire to. A VC funded tech app that has never made money isn’t impressive. This @mdvex thread is fantastic(a person who gets entrepreneurship)
Architecture/urbanism: @wrathofgnon twitter account is fascinating. Consider myself far more bottom up and classical in architecture/urban design now. This is a more important battle than is given credit for I reckon. Modern buildings are a regression in architecture

1/ I finished @nntaleb's new #book Skin in the game, and here are my learnings, insights and notes.

Warning: this thread is going to be huge.
2/ Human systems are systems within systems, interacting in complex ways. No article / paper / logic can capture all interactions of such systems and their evolution over a non-trivial amount of time.

So fear one shot, large scale interventions (such as invasions, UBI, CRISPR)
