Has anyone forgotten how scary it is to confront a crowd of rowdy young men???
A crowd of most thing except puppies and kittens is typically kind of intense at least. Especially a crowd of humans pointed directly AT you and jeering
Nathan Phillips was A BYSTANDER who was seeing a situation GO SOUTH.
Have you ever seen the moments before a bar fight? A bar fight with real injuries? You can see it coming a mile away. But because it hasn’t started yet, only a few people usually stop something before it goes to violence. The bartender or the friends. If they fail?
How many bystanders get involved stopping CROWDS from going South? Some brave people. That’s who. And Nathan Phillips is one. And he did it with a drum and and chant.
That’s the story. That’s been the story everyone understood.

Was talking to my South American friend today about countries that once had stable (legitimate) Democratic elections and now don’t. She remarked: the news media coverage during their transition didn’t look any different than ours. Ie, not any more alarming on the surface.
I had to think about that for a moment, but she’s right. Whatever constituted “mainstream” news media in formerly stable democracies, could be translated into English and wouldn’t look very different day-to-day as long as things weren’t aflame.
It also made me wonder what “alarmed” news media that was truly shaken would look like? Honestly? I couldn’t think it’d look different. There’s still be celebrity news, style pieces, and think pieces. I suppose the newspapers right up to March 1861 would seem same way?

I listened to the 6minute 911 call a woman made to report 2 Native American students that she thought didn't belong. Knowing what the truth was, that they were 2 regular boys from New Mexico checking out a college tour, makes caller's words more important. safety.colostate.edu
Listen to how the woman describes her unease to the 911-dispatcher about the 2 Native American boys. She says "It's probably fine." "I've never done anything like this before." I'm sure I'm being paranoid." It's very banal...
The reason why I think people should actually *listen* to the 911 call this white woman makes on the 2 "suspicious" ( she thinks they are Latino and from Mexico) boys, is to hear the banality of racism. She's not raving, She sounds like most other white parents touring a college.

Who teaches gender roles?

Studies show that early family life is a strong factor in gender roles, with children recognizing gender roles as young as 2 years old. I appreciate you being open to questions. I’m curious on your perspective on gender role inculcation, for lack of a better term. Do you think that women are better at teaching girls to be women, and men teaching boys to be men or are the specifics of “growing up” gender neutral?
As for who’s better at it, we learn through direct and indirect means. Telling someone not to do something can have as much influence as telling someone to do something.

Young men in their teens and early 20s tend to have terrible value systems

Even if they’ve had great early success, their focus is usually obnoxious displays of status, or girls

Can’t fully fault them for this

We live in an age of Peak Narcissism

Appealing to hedonism is persuasive

And you also can’t fault people for marketing and capitalizing on young men’s insecurities this way

Jimin wouldn’t allow himself to be trapped on his shift for any longer than necessary.

“Go, go,” Taehyung hurried, taking Jimin’s apron to let him slip out from behind the counter more quickly. Jimin decided he could get the grounds out from under his nails at home.
This morning had been absolute hell. Two girls ordered seven drinks, Jimin made them all only for them to say they were supposed to be with almond milk.

‘Oh I’m so sorry,’ was he all he had legally been allowed to say at the time, while his mind had far more colorful ideas.
With Jimin officially clocked out, he slumped on the customer side of the now empty service counter, looking to his friend with tired eyes.

“You wanna grab dinner later?”
“I can’t, remem—?
“Ah, right...”

Jimin’s disappointment vanished as Taehyung suddenly smiled to himself.

I keep thinking back to a discussion a few months on reddit about THE BELGARIAD. Several comments were made about it being cliche and pedestrian, and someone said, “Yeah, it’s a fine story, but it’s never going to be a classic.”
And all I could think to respond was, “It’s over thirty years later and we’re still talking about it. How is that NOT ‘a classic’?
But that got me thinking- I cite THE BELGARIAD (and THE MALLOREON, its sequel series) as one of my influential works. But what is that influence? I know I’ve read the whole series several times. My copies of the books are in terrible shape.

The El Paso killer wanted a girl.

He thought he should be able to get her.

He found he couldn't.

So he got her.

There exist no end to narratives—grown in fevered minds, brought whining into the mainstream by professional egos and complicit platforms—to tell him he was right.
Jordan Peterson and his like aren't suppressed shadow intellectuals. Their big "idea" is simply to counter a culture that increasingly values consent with an even more muscular and weaponized non-consent.

They indoctrinate vulnerable and unstable minds into violent radicalism.
