Not my #FirstSurvivor (as there were family members and people at Synagogue who were survivors). But the story of someone at a day centre where I used to help as a teenager really got to me. She was a very miserable lady, always depressed and moaning....
People who knew survivors might recognise those symptoms. Here’s her story:

She and her family were captured and taken to a concentration camp.
The Nazis lined her up with her family in front of a pit of bodies. Then they tried to shoot the whole family using just one bullet. To prevent waste or just for sick kicks. They thought she was dead but they didn’t kill her because she was shorter...
Wounded, she lay under the dead body of her mother , hiding and pretending to be dead. In a pit surrounded by bodies of her family and the remains of her people...
She waited till night and then she crawled out of the pit, escaping into the woods.

Now forward to England in the late 80s...
After she died they found her savings under her mattress. She didn’t trust banks and wanted to be able to run at a moments notice I suppose. She never trusted anyone...
The truth is most survivors including my own family couldn’t express the horror they saw. Many had severe emotional difficulties and couldn’t adjust to normal life...
A tragedy of the Shoah is that so survivors couldn’t carry on. Others never found any joy or peace. But I will never forget them
