This is a fascinating and important story. 👇👇👇 <thread>
One of the most interesting and perhaps illuminating questions is why Trump cares so much about #Venezuela. According to this story, Trump requested a briefing on Venezuela on his 2nd day in office. To state the obvious, that's odd. Why did he care so much?
Another interesting question arises out of the story. We already knew there was a WH mtg earlier this week with Sens. Rubio, Scott, and Rep. Diaz-Balart to discuss the plan for what happened Wed. Turns out Wilbur Ross and Mnuchin were also there...
Now it makes sense why Pompeo and Bolton were there as Sec of State and NSA, but why the Secretaries of Commerce and Treasury? Why are they central to a conversation about who the president of Venezuela is?
As the report says, it was at that meeting that Trump decided to go along with the plan to support Guaido, and following the meeting VP Pence called Guaido to tell him the US would support him declaring himself President.
Let me be clear, I don't know the answers to these questions, but it's impossible to ignore the history of US interventions in the region and their connections to economic interests.
And with the Venezuelan bond markets soaring (reuters.com/article/us-ven…) or the reports that the US is seeking to divert control over Venezuela's oil to Guaido (uk.reuters.com/article/uk-ven…)
The situation in Venezuela remains deeply complex and confusing, but one thing is becoming clear, the Trump Administration is deeply focused on the crisis, deeply involved in the events going on, and motivated by unknown factors that hint at economic, not humanitarian, interests.
