After Kramnik won the World Championship in 2000 his career stalled as he waited to play the "Brains in Bahrain" match against Deep Fritz 7, held in October 2002. It was part of the contract for winning against Kasparov. He missed so many events as this was continually postponed
Later Kramnik suffered from ill health and had to take a break from the game making those wasted couple of years at the peak of his career seem even worse.
Whether it will be seen as a black mark against Kramnik's career that he avoided a rematch against Kasparov I don't know. I honestly never saw it like that but some believe this.
It's not that Kramnik didn't play 2000-2002 but he definitely missed a number of events because the computer match could happen on those dates.
