Kramnik will be remembered as the man who defeated Kasparov, for the World Title Matches against Leko, Anand and especially Topalov. For years in opening theory Kramnik seemed to set the agenda for professionals so high was the quality of his preparation.
I also remember the young Kramnik who emerged as an exciting young player in the 1992 Olympiad scoring 8.5/9. Also his crushing 1996 win in Dos Hermanas with black vs Kasparov. No-one did that to Kasparov.
Kramnik frequently said he was going to retire at 40., he made it to 43. Kasparov retired at 42. His bad play at @tatasteelchess was perhaps a sign of being demob happy but it was sad to watch. I'm sure he can still play much better than that.
