I may be an incorrigible sap, but elementary school concerts always bring me to tears. Children singing very earnest songs about peace and being the change? I am very not okay.
There was a medley of songs about standing up (for your rights, for change, for each other) that featured Bob Marley, REM, and Ben E. King. There were CHILD SOLOS.
If you don’t get teary hearing a 10-year-old sing “Your feet are going to be on the ground / Your head is there to move you around” then I don’t want to know you.
Also at this concert: songs in Hebrew, Swahili, and Maori (with a solo chant!); and Lift Every Voice and Sing. Every child should get arts education.
Anyway, now I am a sentimental mess, hello Cambridge Police, I would like to report a crime 😭😭😭
Also sincere shout-out to the older lady in front of me, who exclaimed mid-song in a strong Boston accent, “They have the voices of ANGELS!”
I just remember that this same music teacher made an entire auditorium of parents sob last concert, by having their children sing “What About Us” (by Pink) and I think he should be reprimanded sternly and then given a raise.
Also, the other music teacher, in teaching the kids songs everyone should know like “Lift Every Voice and Sing”: “I’m always surprised when we start a song and kids don’t know it—and then I realize, maybe that’s *my* responsibility.” ❤️
Anyway, this series of Extremely Earnest Tweets™️ brought to you by this morning’s elementary school concert; please support arts education in public schools
And now to work.
