OMG yes, this absolutely needs to happen.
My extended family lives in St. Louis, so I know it well. Totally fragmented, totally dysfunctional. A merger is exactly what needs to happen.
In economist-speak: Tiebout Equilibrium is inefficient.
"Voters may be...susceptible to fears over changing borders between segregated communities"

"School district consolidation...would be a dealbreaker with a huge number of suburban voters."

Most Americans support high-skilled immigration. But Sweden, the UK, Canada, German, and Australia are even more supportive.
Even among Americans who say they want fewer immigrants overall, most say they want high-skilled immigrants (but TBH I don't really believe them; many may not realize that most high-skilled immigrants aren't white).

In fact, it's a little more subtle than that.

Here's an explanation of the basic theory that wage = marginal product of labor:
But this classic theory assumes that the labor market is highly competitive.

In reality, it's usually not.

1/So, lots of people cite this paper by Gilens and Page as evidence that we live in an oligarchy, that rich people control our political process, etc. etc.: scholar.princeton.edu/sites/default/…

But that is NOT what this paper finds. Not at all.
2/The paper basically looks for correlations between A) policy outcomes, and B) the policy preferences of various groups.

Gilens and Page find that outcomes are more correlated with the preferences of the "rich" than of the "middle class".
3/But who are the "rich" in Gilens and Page's paper?

Answer: Households making more than $146,000 a year (in 2012 dollars).

That's a good income, but billionaires? Billionaires it ain't.

The tale of the busiest man in the world: I had a friend in college who was a superstar overachiever, and never seemed terribly stressed despite an "impossible" schedule, and still had a fulfilling social life.
2/ In college he got degrees in engineering and business from very demanding programs. But then things got really crazy. He got an MBA in Chicago while simultaneously working on Wall St in NYC - commuting back and forth every week.
3/ and he excelled at both - rising super fast on Wall St, and excelling in the MBA program...again all while having a fulfilling social life. How the heck did the manage? Was he just superhuman?

2. I live in rural NW Missouri. We're a red state. Back before political parties got color coded we were, for most of my life, a Democratic state.
3. We didn't become a Republican State in 1966 after LBJ signed the Civil Rights laws and famously said, "I've lost the South for a generation." We stayed blue for at least 15 or 20 years after that.
