1. One of the first stops on my trip will be Albuquerque, where the bulk of the American side of my family lives.
2. Many of my readers know that I have three dads: my biological father who is Kenyan; my great-uncle (RIP), who raised me during the first part of my childhood; and my American dad – Albuquerque is his hometown.

4. Funny story: sometimes when I say that my family lives in ABQ and that it’s my dad’s hometown, people who are familiar with the city will give me a slightly nervous look, then ask this question:
5. “Is your stepdad black?”
6. It never fails to crack me up. ABQ is about 4% black on a high watermark day, so it’s a logical question.
7. For the record, Dad is indeed black, but I do sometimes joke that if you’re in ABQ and you happen to see black people, I’m probably related to them.
8. I do have a doppelganger there, a professor at UNM; biochemistry, IIRC. Twice in ABQ airport, people have walked up to me and asked me if I was she. She is almost certainly a Kenyan. We all look alike.
