So, my senior year of high school I moved to Indiana for my senior year. At the new school, seniors got their own parking spots and could paint it however they wished.

In my randomly assigned spot, the previous senior had painted it with the Confederate flag.
People didn't notice this would be a problem until I showed up and then *everybody* noticed it would be a problem.

It was quickly repainted. Not even by me. But by members of the football team which I had been practicing with a little bit over the summer.
I tell this story now because I notice how the #RalphNortham conversation isn't really focused on the harm he caused to his classmates in real time. There were black people in his school in 1984. And 1985, and 86 and so on. Imagine what they must have thought.
Imagine, coming into medical school, excited and terrified at the same time, flipping thought last year's yearbook that's lying around somewhere, and coming across blackface bro and Klansman friend. Imagine not knowing which one of your classmates will be "the one" your year.
Imagine literally never being able to show your OWN damn yearbook, from your successful time at MEDICAL SCHOOL, to your children because you don't EVER want them to see the racism you went through.
Northman never apologized to those classmates. He's had 35 freaking years to do so. He didn't go up to black people at the reunion and say "hey, maybe you saw our yearbook from that year? I'm sorry, deeply sorry, I ruined it for everybody."
It's not a victimless crime. It's not a politically incorrect foible. Northam hurt people, and didn't apologize for it until he got caught and wanted to keep his job.

He shouldn't be able to get away with it.
After that ridiculous press conference, I fleshed out some of my thoughts and put it into post form.

Please share with anybody who doesn't get why he must resign so we don't have to waste any more time with Governor Coonman and his moonwalk defense.

On @MSNBC just now, @GarrettHaake said, of declaring a national emergency, "it's almost a banana republic solution, but it's something to get the ball rolling."

Not slamming Haake b/c he's just reporting what he's hearing from Republicans but:
A: It's not "almost" it "IS" a banana republic move.
B: Which makes it not a "solution" so much as a DIRECT THREAT TO DEMOCRACY
C: You can't get the ball rolling by shooting the ball!
D: I really need people to stop acting like suspending SELF GOVERNMENT so @realDonasTrump can save face on his stupid vanity project is "one option among many."

I feel like articulating my personal map for deciding what to care about and how desperately to care about it.

This list just works for me (more or less). It may or may not work for you. I offer this in the spirit of combating "Outrage Fatigue."
Premise 1: Trump cannot be removed from office without 2/3rds of the Senate.
Premise 2: Republican Senators desire the votes of Trump's racist, misogynist base.
Therefore: Trump will remain in office. All concerns aimed at removing Trump from office are *less* important to me.
If you accept those premises, and the logical conclusions that follow from them, a hierarchy of caring emerges.

1. Human suffering: Trump causes real human suffering and all available efforts should be deployed to obstruct or lessen the human suffering Trump is able to cause.

1) The Indigenous Peoples March, yesterday in DC, ended at the Lincoln Memorial. I wasn't able to attend but did watch livestreams, and videos, etc.

A dreadful moment happened there, at the Lincoln Memorial.
2) In the videos, an elder is shown singing, playing his hand drum. There is another man with him, also singing, also with a hand drum.

All around then are high school boys in MAGA hats.
3) The boys taunt, chant, and some are doing a tomahawk chop and are singing the tune that goes along with it. Some are wearing shirts that indicate they are there for the pro life march that also took place in DC yesterday. Some wear shirts from Covington Catholic School in KY.

A thread. My evangelical MIL is over here telling me all her opinions about how she thinks every high school senior should take a short-term mission trip to help them learn how good they have it here in America and I JUST DON’T EVEN KNOW WHERE TO START
FIRST OF ALL, TWO THINGS
1) Impoverished people need real solutions, not high school seniors.
2) Impoverished people don’t exist so we can experience gratitude for our excess.
And then there’s the other side of the coin. The spiritual trauma I’m recovering from is directly related to short-term missions, not from what I witnessed, but from how the leaders treated and indoctrinated us. #exvangelical

Their school is now temporarily operating in a shopping mall storefront, wedged between a JCPenney and a toy store. A “#Paradise Strong” banner hangs on one wall, near donated backpacks filled with new school supplies intended for students who lost theirs in the fire.
I met Kaleb Nelson, a #Paradise varsity football player who fled the fire barefoot, fire on both sides of the road. He forgot to save his dad’s wedding ring. Now he’s living in an old R.V. with his girlfriend, Adrianna Orozco. “All we have is each other,” he told me.

I have some thoughts on this letter about “beach week” written by Bart O’Kavanaugh. I attended the same “beach week” (we called it senior week) in 1989. What is stated in the letter is true from my experience. 1)
High school seniors across the region celebrated their high school graduation with a week in Ocean City, MD away from their parents. It was like a rite of passage. (I’m sure some high school kids went every summer, but for many of us, we could only afford the senior week) 2)
Because it was such a rowdy, drunk fest, there were only certain hotels/realtors who would rent to you during that week. You had to plan way in advance and get one of the coveted spots that actually would rent to you. Even then, most places required a parent’s name to reserve. 3)
