Not making excuses, but the only reason I could think of last night for this photo existing that would be quasi-understandable was if it was from the cast party of a production that took on race issues in a meaningful way. And that started me thinking:
blackface is unacceptable.
And the first assumption, barring an explanation, unfortunately, needs to be that the motivation is intolerance, and is unacceptable.
But I do believe that the world would be a better place if everybody - especially politicians and others in positions of power had to spend a day, or a week, experiencing what it's like to be in someone else's skin.
And when it comes to film and theater - I'd love to see a similar challenge put to all the actors - playing parts that do not map to their actual race/ethnicity, in parts with modifications to their physical appearance to look the role, gradually changing over the course of prod.
TBH, acting is an empathetic art, and I would love to see actors challenged to put themselves wholly into the persona of someone with a different sphere of social expectations - both their expectations of others, and what others expect from them.
And I wonder if that could be one way of helping to move us into a post-racial society.

Obvs. not happening overnight, and I wouldn't even suggest it until we get the mob out of the Arts.

But it's just a thought.
And not meant to make any excuses for anything Northam may have done.
