In a way, October 2018 has felt like October 19, 1987, but in super slow motion. Here's the headline from the following day. Explanations sound familiar: "analysts scrambled for explanations, which ranged from rising interest rates...to the possibility of war..."
It’s interesting what is still considered defensive. Low-growth businesses like Hershey, Nestle, Walmart and P&G are up in October.
Here's a comparison of P/E multiples (straight from Bloomberg) before and after the Black Monday crash in Oct 1987 (-20.5%) and this year's slow-mo crash (-21.0%). Back then, interest rates were sky high and P/E implied strong growth; today it's the opposite, with fear baked in

Updated through 2/9/2018 - MSFT beating KO and the S&P 500, despite Raikes' suspicion that Microsoft might have a narrower moat than Coke.

Today the opposite appears to be the case.

Putting aside the trial of the separatist leaders, there is much else to clarify, especially re foreign perception of events in #Catalonia and #Spain and the class divide. A few thoughts - thread begins here / abro hilo (en inglés).
As the generations that lived through WW2 and the post-war reconstruction begin to disappear forever, Europe is once again at something of a turning point, socially and politically.
The last thing a forward-looking Europe needs now is a resurgence of petty regionalisms and ethno-nationalisms. It has too much else to deal with, what with an immigration crisis, a decaying America, a disoriented and departing UK, and a resurgent Russia.

1/ The origin of what would be called Microsoft Excel [original code name Plan 2.0 and then Odyssey] can be traced to a retreat at the Red Lion hotel in Bellevue in October of 1983. Bill Gates, Jeff Raikes, Doug Klunder, Jabe Blumenthal, Pete Higgins and others were there.
2/ Microsoft Multiplan version 1.00 for MS-DOS shipped on August 1, 1982 and had a valuable feature called re-calc. In 1981 there were about 70 or 80 different personal computer architectures (e.g., 6502, Apple II, Z80, CPM/80, MS-DOS, CPM/86). Mutliplan ran on all of them.
3/ January 20, 1983 Lotus shipped 16-bit 1-2-3, which finished a short fiscal year with about $53 million in revenue. The three key features of Lotus 1-2-3 were: faster spreadsheets, bigger spreadsheets and built-in business graphics, all of which were well mapped to the IBM PC.
