I grew up in Georgia. I was exposed to all parts of southern culture, good and bad. I was never told about, overheard or even saw “Blackface.” I never darkened my skin, but had I for the purpose of impersonating a celebrity I admired, I wouldn’t have seen the link to BF/racism.
We are going down a path as outlined in the book “The Coddling of the American Mind” where we treat hurtful ignorance as if I were intentional hate. Usually as political opportunist. This is both immoral and destructive.
We are looking for reason to be hurt, outraged and point a finger. When we could be weighing the offenders intent, current character (most are decades old offenses) and offering perspective in hopes of winning them over to a new truth.
I’m guilty of this, most of us are. We can’t blame “the media” solely on this one. We are buying into that outrage culture hook, line and sinker and losing dignity in doing so. Grace is more powerful than vengeance. Treating the ignorant as hate is a net negative.
