Booker talking about getting “my PhD on the streets of Newark” in Mason City, IA.
Booker talking about his work on criminal justice reform: “The Russians imprison political enemies. In Turkey, they put journalists in prison. In America, we imprison the most vulnerable.”
One of Booker's big laugh lines is describing himself on the couch "watchin' Rachel" and getting angry. "I say, somebody should do something! And then I think: Come on, you're a senator, man!"
First Q to Booker is about $15 min wage and Medicare for All. You see what a plus it is that Phil Murphy won that gov race: Booker is able to say "We passed the $15 minimum wage in my state" and get applause.
Booker brings his Newark experience into the Medicare answer: "According to the last census, my neighborhood is about $14,000 per family... if you don't believe the system is broken, you need to wake up to the challenges I see."
Like Brown, Booker points out that the ACA almost allowed a Medicare buy-in for people 55 and over. "If we had done that, it would have massively expanded health care for millions of Americans." Brown shames Lieberman by name for this; Booker says "we were one vote short."
Second Q to Booker is about charter schools. "I know there's a lot of charter debates, but that's 3 percent of our schools," he says. Wants "great public education for all of our children."
Booker's education answer ends up swerving into paid family leave. "The Congo and Afghanistan have paid family leave!"
Mid-question a Democrat says that his wife couldn't make it today. Booker takes out his phone and records a selfie video with the voter, who then continues his question.
One big rhetorical difference I hear between Booker and Warren is that Booker cites other countries' successful social programs as a model for us. Warren more often refers back to something that USED to work in the US but was gutted in 1980s.
Sanders is the Goldilocks in this game: Combo of "how come every other country gets X" and "we USED to have Y and what happened?"
