I totally forgot about the opening to the movie and I don't like many book to movie adaptations, but the way we get to see things going on outside Katniss' view offers very potant moments. Goddamn that opening.
"I think the Games used to be a punishment, but now it's more than that?"

"As game designer for the last three years, what do you think is your signature?"

*thinks for a moment, then suddenly switches to Prim waking up screaming about a nightmare being chosen.*
Actually. I'll just keep all my movie commentary here so people can mute the thread if need be. Or comment to my comments. Makes homework more fun.
Damn, that's a contrast in living conditions. Good job on scenery design for this movie already.
I never noticed the irony of having the reaping occur at the Hall of Justice.
"I'm not having kids."Foreshadowing already all the way to the end of the series. Honestly tho, relatable reasoning.
That siren sounded like a natural disaster siren instead of anything cheery. They ain't even trying for pretense outside the capital, really.
They have their dna in blood. Never caught that symbolism before, either. Like a blood contract almost.
Here comes the propaganda video and obligary shot of a happy kid being lifted up in the air by their dad. So beautiful and sunshiny.
And there's the reveal.
And Absolutely No One Clapped.
Ah. Flashback. "Shit, you're the dude that saved my life. Fuck. We're gonna be trying to kill each other."
Their expressions when Eli is rambling about crystal doornobs is priceless.
"You get to enjoy all of this, even if it's only for a little while".

Peta and Katniss: "...bitch. The fuck."
Ah. And there's Haymitch. Drunk and desensitized snarkmaster extraordinaire.
"Embrace the probability of you eminent death, and know, in your heart, that there's nothing I can do to save you." My, what a cheery introduction.
I love how optimistic Peta is. This is why I always favored him over Gale. Someone needs to try and find a bright spot...without Eli's, uh, overdoing it.
THAT IS MAHOGANY! Classic line.
Good god they're acting like Peta is a star football player.
God I love Cena. He's like...the only person at that place that actually gets it.
Oh shit. First shot of Rue looking like she's wearing a halo. Instead of a wreath. Fuck.
That looks like a familiar seal...
I wonder if that blue "Native American" looking costume was purposefully choosen to say something, considering it was shown right after a comment of reflecting district. So far all the design choices seem very purposeful.
First sight of district twelve. Obviously out of the ordanary from their reactions. Love the confusion on Snow's face.
Oh. There's cowboy outfits too. Cena is right. These other designers aren't very creative.
Why do I keep saying Eli? It's Effie.
District one and two literally train till age eighteen to be killers, when they volunteer so no little children have to die and they already know how to fight. Meanwhile, you're punished just for hunting. But they don't receive special treatment here! No desserts!!!
I love how they show the nonfighting skills like they do.
Rue is so cute...
Damn. It must be hard seeing all these Capital kids running around with plastic swords pretending to kill each other right in front of you. Hunger Games doesn't pull punches.
Bastards aren't even paying attention to her until she annouces herself. And you go Katniss with that apple shot.
That bow. That sassy bow.
Snow already hates her. Old ass.
Ah. "Hope. Only thing stronger than fear. A little hope is effective. A lot of hope is dangerous." Reality in television, my friends, straight from the mouth of an old white dude who should have died ages ago. Fuck Snow.
Ceaser had to be a intentional name to use.
Also, notice District one and two have names more suited to the Capital. Case in point, Glimmer.
I love how they use film techniques to show her shock and disorientation so well.
Including the indistinct audio. She's completely retreating under preasure and they clue into it instead of outright using dialogue to show you like in some movies. Really clever.
I love how they all act so moved Katniss volunteered for Prim, but then talk about the honor. They don't even ask her why. They KNOW.
I love how it starts out showing Peta like he's naive, but then you realize he's actually extremely smart with people and it actually is thought about and not just done.
And then there's the line "I don't want them to change me." Damn.
Ah. Glimmer is smiling at takeoff, of course.
I also love how they don't try to make her look brave. She was so worried about looking weak after Peta's announcement that he had a crush on her, but theyrenot going for the "tough girl". She's allowed to show her fear and that's something that makes the character feel real.
Also, this film has really diverse casting. Too bad they changed Katniss from being olive toned to white, but I still applaud them for the rest of the casting, both in tributes and in background characters.
Gale followed through saying people shouldn't watch even when, or especially because, Katniss was a part of it. Glad they included that moment. Also, damn. No hold barred on that first bloodbath.
Holy fuck the filmwork.
Also, thinking back on the first time this got big, anyone remember how much stuff went on about team Peta vs team Gale. You know, instead of the central message? I feel like that's very relevant.
And again it focuses on survival over straight agression with Katniss' choosen starting equipment.
Oh. Butterfly!
They really did research into actual survival techniques here. Way to go.
Fuck. One of the little kids was first to die.
I actually almost like it better than the book due to being able to see behind the scenes. That really gives a new angle that drives home the callous attitudes.
"Get a canon ready" Bastard.
Saying "Maybe you should throw the sword" while people are trying to kill, you with arrows is such a power move. Damn. You could almost kill them with that sass.
Those wounds are made to look so realistic. I love that it doesn't create a detachment like with typical fantasy violence made for show.
They really are overconfident. They slept without anyone even taking watch. Might have taught fighting in district one and two, but they sure didn't teach any common sense.
Don't swat at the wasps!!!
Glimmer got her karma. Way to go, Katniss.
Oh. More good camera work. Shit. She's seeing her mom in the hallucination, I think.
Oh. It showed a pic og her dad.
And then he dies. I really like how they're showing all this story in a natural way since they can't use internal monologues like in the book.
And now I have to take a break.
And we're back with the commentary! And lunch. And being reminded just how much closer our asses are to getting here every day.
Ah. The first example of that famous whistle.
Ah. Fox. Love that tricky girl, even tho we didn't see her much before the end.
Katniss, if we knew it was going to explode, why did you not stay further back???
No, Rue! Fuck! I know what's gonna happen and it's still so fucking sad every time.
FUCK
There's the flowers, and here comes the riot.
And so desent is met with force...
Goddamn, Snow. Say how you really feel. "Have you seen districts 10, 11, and twelve? I have. They're full of underdogs. If you did you wouldn't root for them either."

Yes, I guess challeging authority would make seeing from their eyes a bit scary.
Now that I've been thinking of it, how did Peta get the paint?
Damn. Gale saw the kiss.
Oh. Soup.
"I'm not good at saying something." You know. I find this a very interesting part of her character considering she's going to lead a rebellion. And og. Big kiss.
Katniss should have taken the other pack, too.
Theory. Foxface meant to eat the berries and die. Because she could make it look like an accident, whereas suiside would probably bring repercussions on her family. She'd been following Peta and never attacked. Makes sense.
The game designer dude is the fucking devil.
Crunchy leaves. How do people sneak in forests at all? Anyway, self note. Sounds adding tension.
Big pupper with humanish face. Scary shit.
Fuck Trush.
And now he's making me feel bad for him.
Damn that's gruesome. Good on Katniss for putting him out of his misery, tho.
I say again. That fucking devil.
Clever Katniss.
Oh that irony. Guees who's eating the berries now.
And snow purposefully places the crown on Katniss. You brought your own fuck up making her the symbol of the two that way.
Also, after saying he didn't want to kill, Peta gave the final shove. Although technically Katniss put the dude out of his misery.
And...movie over!
