One of our investors asked me about what I learned from Skillshare that I’ll apply to Otis. Here’s what I wrote:

1. Build an experienced team as early as possible
2. Get feedback on big strategic decisions early
3. Play to my strengths and hire around my weaknesses (back to #1)
If I could pick one, it would be around hiring amazing people and getting the f*ck out of their way. Our COO at Skillshare did such a great job that I realized he would be a far better CEO than me at scaling the company. I got the f*ck out of his way and the company has grown 4x.
Everyone tells you to improve your weaknesses. Nah, play to your superpower strengths. You'll get 10x leverage improving your strengths than making 10% incremental improvements on your weaknesses. Be aware of the latter & minimize them but find your Luka step-back 3.
For #2: focus on increasing the success rate % of your strategic decisions. Don't make rookie mistakes. Learn from others that have done it before you. Be humble. Surround yourself with smart people that push back. Strive to get there 2x faster by executing on the right things.

Hired someone who made a personal deck. Covered background, stories, strengths & weaknesses, values, principles, goals, how s/he thinks, etc. Great way to stand out. Going to now make this part of our interview process.

Personally, I love stories. Makes the "interview" a lot more personable and fun.

"I grew up in X town. Didn't have much but worked my way up through persistence. Got lucky in Y but it didn't work out. Here's what I learned from that experience and why I want to work at Z."

Tech predictions for 2019:

1) Podcasts will be funded, sold and monetized like content tech startups. We will see seed/growth rounds, acquisitions and revenues reaching close to $xxx,000,000 for a media company that rolls them up.
2) New entrepreneurs will start tackling problems that older entrepreneurs felt were impossible to tackle because of network effects: social networks. We will see a new social network emerge that competes with Facebook on data privacy, micro-communities, and quality engagement.
3) ChinaTech will continue its dominance globally. Chinese start-ups will make up the majority on the $10B+ valuation list as they expand outside of China. The world will start paying attention and look at them as innovators and not purely as copycats.

Here's a take:

1/ Build an unfair advantage that compounds over time (e.g. Specific skills/knowledge)

Compound over time means that the more you put in, the better you get, increasing your defensibility.

It also means that it looks impressive now + will look impressive later.
How do you know your unfair advantage?

Ask others: What’s something that’s easy for you to do but hard for others?

AND very difficult for people to reverse engineer?

The Q to ask when evaluating career decisions:

What can you do, today, that makes it easier for you to have the career opportunities + resources you desire, tomorrow, in a way that compounds and is defensible?

I think it’s important to clarify some misunderstanding as regards Lagos Politics as representative of the politics of the Yorubas - it’s false.

And I say this because I just saw a thread, explaining Tinubu’s Lagos as symbolic of Yoruba politics, in reaction to this perception.
As with all issues, the facts do not support that Lagos symbolism - every other SW State has had a period of governance by PDP for at least one term, many have had two terms in fact and Lagos is the outlier.

So Lagos politics is what it is, by itself, not symbolic of that zone.
Why is Lagos unique politically in the SW by being enslaved to one party or one man?

I’ve asked myself this and two things come to mind: the average Lagos resident is here to make money and cares less about the politics/governance/elite laziness and secondly, Tinubu.

1) There’s a lot of BS about @nntaleb’s Black Swan, antifragility & skin in da game. Let’s take the gloves off and get into trouble.
2) When the Swan flew out, it was immediately butchered by imbeciles not understanding that you can’t predict the unpredictable.

That is the point – and an IQ filter NNT himself proly did not expect.
3) In any complex domain – life! – the Blackest Swan is always skulking around the corner. You know it’s coming, but you don’t know what where when. You can't tame what you've never even conceived of.
