Genesis is thousands of years old, written in an ancient language, by someone w/ a perspective that's almost entirely foreign to modern Western sensibilities. Any reputable scholar would blanch at the idea that you can read it w/o context and not miss many levels of meaning.
That said, even a surface-level reading of Genesis shows it differs remarkably from other ancient Mesopotamian creation stories. Compare Genesis with the ancient Babylonian account, the Enuma Elish. They are worlds apart. sixdayscience.com/2016/07/07/gen…
A young-earther like Ken Hamm is justified in interpreting Genesis as a literal account of God's creation and development of the universe, the Earth, and life on Earth. However, he rejects the interpretations of modern science and what we can learn by comparing it with scripture.
A straightforward reading of Genesis gives us the most important piece of information: God created everything. And if God created everything, shouldn't a scientific account of God's work accord with the written account? The fact is, they do accord, even w/ minimal interpretation.
But a very thorough interpretation of Genesis unlocks a living miracle. It shows us, in Solomon's words, the apples of gold (deep wisdom) lying within the bowl of silver (the surface-level wisdom). It's a tremendous gift from God to those who are open to that wisdom.
