I’m trying to pinpoint this phenomenon where incompetent radicals end up resembling each other despite carrying diametrically opposing banners — socialists & anarchists, for example
Highly competent radicals end up not looking like radicals at all. “He’s a good kid, but he has some very funny ideas.” Too often people who make bets on a radical worldview & win big end up getting reduced to “smart, eccentric” while “savvy” gets pinned on smooth talkers
Sometimes I imagine the thinkers I follow as cult leaders, flowy garb & all. I think about the tenets of my cults, the extant priesthood & the heathens, why people join, what they want & whether they tend to get it. This is a surprisingly useful exercise for noticing bullshit
