My heart is breaking for those that have been abused, hurt, and unheard
When people talk about the "missing stair" this is what that looks like...
This man went to prison... For sexual assault... Came out... And started pastoring again... He's still on probation... But he's pastoring... I'm sorry that doesn't make any sense
I want to make something clear... This is not about forgiveness... It's not about reconciliation... This is about systemic failure... And our inability to love each other enough to be accountable
The test of our faith is how we respond to those who have been abused...
When you are wrong... Don't spin... Don't cover up... Don't deflect Confess... Listen to those who have been harmed... ask to be forgiven... Detail the steps you will take to live a repentant life
People are going to be angry... They should be angry... And their anger is valid

The thing that stands out in the story is the same thing that stands out to me every time. I grew up in Fundamentalist Christian churches like SBC; they are so susceptible to leadership models that turn head pastors into authoritarian leaders because of headship doctrine.

Last year, at likely my final SBC convention, I had option of hearing Pence laud Trump (someone who boasted abt sexual assualt) or to speak at the @SBCForSuchATime rally. I chose the latter. I chose the latter b/c THIS is evil and this is a reality in SBC.

I understand the initial urge of SBC pastors & leaders to publicly renounce the evils entailed here, but I’d ask them to take a pause. Before they do, I’d ask them to consider how they’ve contributed to this reality & if they need to repent personally too.
Don’t be so quick too repudiate unless you 1st self-assess & are willing to include yourself as part of the problem. If you have power & influence in SBC at the highest levels, you may be part of the problem. I’ve seen many dismiss voices crying out to support powerful friends.

@HoustonChron There is a correlation between these religions that have at their core strict high boundaries about premarital sex, sexuality, and gender roles. Male leadership is paramount, and sexuality is repressed.
@HoustonChron What is this correlation? The more they suppress sexuality, the more likely they are to abuse it. And the more likely they are to blame victims for the abuse.

I was 23, married a year, pregnant with our first child. I was being trained to lead a small group of middle schoolers at the church summer camp.

So was he.

He is low serving time, one of the men named in @HoustonChron database, for what he did to boys. houstonchronicle.com/news/investiga…
I didn’t know. I didn’t think any of us had known. I trusted the church version of facts.

I was never told that my small group of girls included one who had been in his Sunday school class. No one ever checked on her or talked to her about what happened because she was a girl.
She was a bit belligerent that summer.

She had good reason to be.

(She’s a dear friend now that we’re both adults, and I love her feistiness now as much as I was confused by it then.)
