One striking passage from the Qur'an (Saffat 37:133-138) seems to suggest that its hearers pass by the ruins of Sodom and Gomorrah "day and night (muṣbiḥīna wa-bi-l-layl)" -- which quite a ways off from Mecca (~1,400 km!)
In English translation:
[133] Lot was also one of the messengers. [134] We saved him and all his family– [135] except for an old woman who stayed behind– [136] and We destroyed the rest. [137] You [pl.] pass by them morning [138] and night: will you not take heed?
The conventional interpretation is that verse refers to a location on a trade route traveled by Meccans--a claim that is supported by Q. Hijr 15:76, which states that the signs of God's punishment of Lot's people can be found "on an established road." What site can this refer to?
I would place my bet on the site in question being the Byzantine monastery called the Sanctuary of Agios Lot. (pic credit: Lot and his guests from the Cotton Genesis)

A prominent site in Late Antique Palestine well into into the seventh century CE, it appears on the famous Madaba Map. If the Qur'an indeed testifies of its importance, Muhammad and those to whom he preached the Qur'an likely traveled through the region themselves.
Recent excavations have revealed quite a bit about the site, revealing Greek inscriptions, a basilica with mosaics, evidence of Umayyad-era renovations and far more. See Konstantinos D. Politis' summary of the findings here:
