After three months of trial and more than a week of jury deliberations, Chapo Guzman was found guilty on all 10 counts of his indictment.
Here's the story of the day.
nytimes.com/2019/02/12/nyr…
There was an amazing 25-minute stretch between the announcement of a verdict and the actual reading.
Rich Donoghue, the US attorney in Brooklyn, showed up to shake hands with his trial team. In a show of sportsmanship, Jeff Lichtman, one of Chapo's lawyers, did the same.
Judge Cogan's deputy, Melonie Clarke, entered the room at 12:01 pm to say a verdict had been reached. Chapo was brought in by marshals at 12:25 pm. From the bench Judge Cogan announced: "We have reached a verdict."
After he read the verdict aloud, Judge Cogan, clearly emotional, told jurors that in his 13 years of trial work he'd never seen a jury pay as much attention or scrutinize the evidence as closely as they had.
"Quite frankly," he said, "it made me proud to be an American."
Some prosecutors were visibly moved by the jury's decision. Even though they had expected a guilty verdict, Chapo's lawyers were also emotional. The sense of moment--the end of the marathon after more than three months--was palpable all around.
