If you suspect (and many do) that there is no HoC majority for a further vote or for “Common Market 2.0”, this may well be the best way of avoiding “no deal”. telegraph.co.uk/politics/2019/…
“Common Market 2.0” has the advantage of being based on an existing model. And (for reasons set out by its advocates) when one looks at the detail it is more flexible than portrayed by its detractors.
But negotiating it won’t be entirely a walk in the park. And the price of accepting the whole of EEA/EU FOM may just be politically impossible.
The deep Association Agreement idea - trading more mobility of people (eg limiting restrictions to a “job offer” rule or “no benefits/tax credits for a while”) for participation in EU services markets (the gaping hole in the current Political Declaration) -could then be a runner.
The problem (as I see it) with the Corbyn proposal is that unless you blur the FOM red line (a point not mentioned at all in his letter) you can’t hope to improve the gaping hole in the political declaration on services.
Further - and here I’m speculating - since much of the passion and anger on the Remain side is about the brutal ending of FOM, compromising on that issue (beyond the PM but not ruled out by many Leavers) may be the best way of bringing the country together.
Leavers get some brake on FOM which we couldn’t have got in EU; remainers keep the core of their ability to move around the EU.
