A solution to this problem is… do not apply to work in pro-ball unless teams are reaching out to you. Why? There are 3 things that can get you hired - 1) Who you know 2) What projects you have done that you can show teams 3) where you went to school
Say you decide to start at the bottom and take an internship with a team instead… you are essentially making the choice to close your work off from 29 prospective employers. You automatically fail thing #2 right off the bat with every other team. Goodbye leverage.
Speaking as someone who has made this mistake, please believe me when I say you are *significantly* more likely to land a better, higher paying job in pro baseball by working somewhere else and publishing research on a blog rather than taking an internship.
Not only that, but you will make more money working elsewhere (by more I mean actually enough to survive) and not have to deal with the litany of *ridiculous* communication issues, staff development issues, and daily nonsense that run rampant in the industry.
Lastly, you will develop your skills at a much faster rate by publishing your own research than working for a team. If you think anyone has the time or motivation to provide you legit feedback on a project or that clipping video is anything more than bitch work, you’re wrong
This isn’t to say all internships/low level jobs in baseball are bad – I actually really enjoyed my time with one organization – but the truth is what it is. Today you have to go Internship -> Fellowship -> Full time and you’re dumb if you subject yourself to that
Also, teams are dumb for thinking they're extracting surplus $ by cutting labor costs to a min by relying on low $ interns to work with new tech. In reality, they're basically doing equivalent of buying a milllion dollar home and furnishing it with supplies from the dollar store
