CPD saying #JussieSmollett is indicted....a few thoughts:
Mr. Smollett is talented, famous, successful, attractive—he has everything going for him. Many people would be happy for just a fraction of those blessings. But, instead of acknowledging the power of his success, he chose- quite intentionally- to seek power from being a victim.
Instead of owning his actions as an individual, Jussie tried to reduce his own experience to being part of a collective and trade on victimhood within a group. This is obviously a sickness of his, but also a sickness of many others as well.
We have to stop the us vs. them bs. Stop viewing people by their race, sexual orientation, gender, etc—the things that have been fervently fought against for decades--and view people as individuals. There are good & bad people in every “group” but a group should never define you—
--you are responsible for your own actions, not the actions of everyone who shares a skin color, set of genes and/or sexual orientation with you. I can only hope that the one good thing that comes out of this is that perhaps people will take a pause re identity politics.
PS re: Jussie Smollett-- a shout out to CPD for their diligent work and to our amazing Chicago reporters, including @RaferWeigel, @RobElgasABC7, @CharlieDeMar and @CWBChicago who exemplified outstanding journalism--the national media should take note and follow their examples
