The thing that gets me about the #JussieSmollett story is that 3 days ago we learned that Trump's folks tried to give nuclear secrets to Saudi Arabia, a Coast Guard LT. was arrested with a battery of arms & a list of targets, and we're STILL holding kids in cages.
1/ But while we're talking about it... here's the thing.

It seems clear he broke the law and should face the consequences. His reasons were his reasons, unimaginable as they seem to most of us.

But if Trump thinks this is some kinda MAGA vindication, think the hell again.
2/ Why he did it is a secondary question. The real question is, why did he think anyone would believe it?

And no, to those who will undoubtedly reply to this saying it's because "dem libs are gullible" or because of the "fake news," it's not because of either of those.
3/ It's because though his was fake, in reality these vile, racist, homophobic, hate-filled attacks are ACTUALLY HAPPENING NEARLY EVERY DAY!

THREAD: Much punditry around the #FloridaRecount but not much in the way of education regarding what is, in fact, happening and is supposed to happen under the law.

After 14 hours working the recount in my county, I want to get a few things straight. Let's dig in.

1/
The initial "recount" is mandated by law if any contest is within .50%. Most know this. But what they don't know if how this "machine recount" works. Across the state VOLUNTEER poll workers are sitting in front of voting machines simply re-feeding the ballots. That is it.

2/
Fraud? No chance. They are forbidden from having anything aside from a red pen. They cannot do anything but feed the machines. It looks and sounds like the video slots at a cheap casino. One worker even said, "When do I get my coupon for the free buffet?"

SHORT THREAD: With @senatemajldr Mitch McConnell's second straight day of ranting from the Senate floor, a quick note on the depth of hypocrisy he displays.

I'm not talking about his complaints of delay after he blocked Garland for, well, forever. There's something deeper.

It is related to Garland, but not how you think.

Why did they block Garland? The most common refrain was that it would be improper to permit a liberal President from filling Scalia's seat, with a dash and sprinkle of "balance of the court" sanctity BS.

2/
Let's be clear. When a Justice retires or dies... that's it. There is no posterity for the chair in which they sat, there's no "balance of the Court" consideration, & the arguments advanced in this regard at the time were the most hypocritical aspect of it all.

THREAD: #Kavanaugh was an objectively-terrible witness. He was obtuse. He was evasive. He lost his cool. He, at best, was extremely loose with verifiable truths.

That Trump didn't want or expect to win—as I wrote about in Tweet #1—is borne out by his promise to spend $1 billion on his campaign and the reality that he starved it of money from Day 1.

The money he put in, he put in as a loan, putting his campaign in debt from the jump. 2/

1/ Not only did Prince appear without counsel—though he could be charged with a crime for any lie he told—he told the House Intel Committee he had no plans to *hire* an attorney. In the situation he's in—and given who he is—that statement is actually chilling. I'll tell you why.
2/ It suggests he may expect a pardon for any misconduct; or is so confident the GOP won't make him answer any questions he doesn't want to that he sees no risk of self-incrimination; or that he's that confident in his skills as a liar; or thinks his misdeeds can't be uncovered.
