Just been in a briefing on next week’s North Korean summit. Senior US admin officials say agreeing definition for denuclearisation, freezing nuclear programs + agreeing a road map are among priorities.
Officials say that progress stalled last Nov / Dec, with talks entering a "holding pattern". Unclear why, possibly "internal issues" in Pyongyang. But engagement back with "full force" from late December.
No details yet on format for Trump-Kim meeting in Vietnam, but likely to be similar to Singapore - a one-on-one, a shared meal, talks with the wider teams.
US officials playing down the idea of withdrawing all troops from South Korea in return for peace treaty to end Korean War. "I've never discussed that in any round of negotiations" says one.
US officials parried when asked for N Korea’s definition of denuclearisation, if creating a US envoy office in country was being discussed + whether any announcements are agreed already.
NB: Trump's North Korean envoy has been explicit about his own definition of denuclearisation.

"The elimination of all weapons of mass destruction, their means of delivery and the means to produce them", as he put it at a speech last month.
