I've been to the Jefferson Memorial multiple times, but had never fully appreciated the extent to which he was turned (in 1947 when it was built) into a Popular Front version of himself. nps.gov/thje/learn/pho…
It's these two quotes in particular, esp. the first one, that made me think of the Jefferson Memorial as "Jefferson, remade for the age of Gunnar Myrdal."
The Northeast quote is basically saying "let me thread the needle here between racial progressivism and gradualism via education, with a shout out to 'God' and 'the common people.'"
The Southeast quote is, I suspect, intended to echo the Wilsonian, modernist rationale for the New Deal state. This is inventing a Jefferson who can stand as a founder of FDR's Democratic party in all of its coalitional complexity.
Note the various mashups and contortions necessary in the Northeast quote on slavery to finesse Jefferson's position on slavery and race. I can only imagine what those conversations were like as the memorial committee crafted that cobbled together quote.

Of course Roger Stone would be the trojan horse for smuggling 2 Live Crew back onto the national stage. FWIW, I think it's worth noting that Taylor Swift's "Look What You Made Me Do" bears an uncanny resemblance to 2 Live's biggest hit.

I did something similar to this 5 years ago, in anticipation of EC & @theroots' Wise Up Ghost LP, on tumblr.

(You can still find all those posts if you look, although a lot of the YouTube links etc are now dead ends. It was 40 Days Of EC then, so for 2018 I'm upping it to 45.)
Mostly I will be going chronologically from the early years right up to the present, but it feels right to start out with Costello's 2002 song, "45."

A long, long time ago, 1988, a young Boris Johnson was fortunate to be a cub reporter for @TheTimes. His first article (that I can find) was about a social security office in Peckham.

Boris got his first front page (sort of) within a few weeks & covered this strike across a number of articles. I need to check if Mr Corbyn was protesting at this, I think he might have been.

One of his first big stories (& front page by himself) was the discovery of a long lost palace (built in the 1320s) on the Southbank. Boris even managed to get a juicy quote from an Oxford don about it.
