My theory here isn’t some whimsical musings. Well, maybe it is but it’s based on a somewhat obscure connection I have to JWR. When she was a prosecutor, I had files with her. Some have noted that she can be difficult. I found her to be pleasant to talk to, difficult to work with.
I couldn’t reason with her. I’d explain the law and I felt she didn’t get it. The changes she made to impaired driving law make me think she didn’t really get the Charter. She seemed completely unforgiving of (other people’s) human failings. She seemed to have a lot of anger.
I thought she was not well suited to be a prosecutor. I also wanted her off my files because it was clear to me she would be difficult to deal with. So in one of our pleasant phone conversations I made a suggestion to her about some life choices.
I told her look, you’re a lawyer. Your dad is famous. You come from a famous family. What are you doing spinning your wheels here as Crown Counsel?
I said why don’t you apply for an in-service (BC government) position in treaty negotiations. Governments must deal in good faith.
I said the way they can establish that they’re bargaining in good faith is if they have First Nations lawyers on both sides of the table. A few years on, go to the other side, settle some land claims, make a fortune and then become the head of the B.C. Assembly of First Nations.
There was some silence on the phone and then she said that’s a good idea. I encouraged some more and moved on.
The following week I called back. She had moved to treaty negotiations.
I resolved my files with a more reasonable prosecutor.
The fact that she did all of that and then became Justice Minister leads me to believe she’s ambitious enough to go for the top job. But she’ll never speak French well enough to be Liberal leader. And she’s very conservative. Just look at her legislative record.
Her mandate was to reverse Harper’s mandatory minimums. She didn’t touch them.
Her mandate was to deal with the crisis incarceration rate of First Nations. She did nothing.
Cannabis legalization is widely panned as new prohibition. And then we have these stupid DUI laws. Ugh.
JWR should be considered a hero to the Conservatives. Importantly, @AndrewScheer is unelectable. He’s such a tool that they have 0% chance of winning in the next Federal election. Then he’ll be out and they’ll need a serious makeover. What’s their greatest weakness?
The Conservatives have a history of being racist misogynists. This makes them almost electable but not with @AndrewScheer because he’s such a tool. But if they had a Indigenous female leader, they’d defeat that criticism. JWR is palatable to the Conservatives and they could win.
In the long chess game I suspect JWR is setting up her move. She has made JT look bad. She has damaged the Liberals. She played the game. She has timed it so she could cross the floor and keep her seat next election. The Conservatives will have a leadership contest right after.
She has experience in governing. She advanced the Conservative agenda while in a Liberal government. As the leader of the Conservatives they might actually have a chance at taking the following election.
But for @cafreeland who will outflank her as the Liberal leader.
