1/So there was lots of talk at @AACNursing #AACNdoc20 re: #Nursing #PhD pipeline, getting folx esp prelicensure students ‘excited’ about #nursingscience & the #BStoPhD

I totally revamped our #nursingresearch & #innovation course @UMassAmherst last fall to do just that

Thread ⬇️
2/ I told the Asst Dean when I took it on that regardless of the learning objectives for the course I had only 1 GOAL:

That by the end of the semester, these students would be EXCITED!-or at very least, just a little bit CURIOUS-about a career in #nursingscience & #innovation
3/ A note about context: This was a course of ~85 Accel BS students, taught in an urban campus that is geographically ~40mins drive from main @UMassAmherst campus, in the . The classroom assigned had no windows. Class ran 8am-1030am Weds, before more courses. I say this b/c....

Lets talk about John Maynard #Keynes and his #Passion for #Art...
John Maynard #Keynes is perhaps most famous for his 1936 Magnum Opus, The General #Theory of #Employment, #Interest, and #Money in which he argued for a more active role of #FiscalPolicy in #Macroeconomic management...
It is hardly disputable that #Keynes' work, and his subsequent roles during the #BrettonWoods era marked a significant intellectual shift in the way we have come to understand #Economics as a discipline...

Let us talk about the #FED #FOMC's 1st #MonetaryPolicy meeting of 2020. Specifically, let us talk about the puzzle that is a flatter #PhillipsCurve...
The #FederalOpenMarketCommittee (#FOMC) of the #FederalReserveBank (#FED) of the #US concluded its 1st meeting of 2020 on the 29th January 2020. As expected, the FED did not change rates but left the #KeyPolicyRate, the #FederalFundsRate (#FFR) in the 1.5%-1.75% range...
Indeed, if one considers the #FED #Dotplot of December 2019, the decision to keep rates unchanged would not come as a surprise. What I wanted to focus on today is some key passages in the statement, highlighted in yellow in the screenshot below...its all #PhillipsCurve...

My current #Working #Research #Topic: "A Review of the #CommonMonetaryArea of #SouthernAfrica: Are Client Countries Better-off De-Linking from the #Anchor #Economy?". I'm using #OptimumCurrencyArea #OCA #Theory to analyse the #CMA arrangement. Draft will be ready January end..!
The #CommonMonetaryArea of #SouthernAfrica or #CMA could seem to some (mostly the technically inclined) to be a no-brainer & a clear natural #OptimumCurrencyArea given the historical links between the #anchor #SouthAfrica & the #clients (#Lesotho #Eswatini & #Namibia)...
Be that as it may, 2020 marks 46 years since the #RandMonetaryArea - #RMA agreement and 34 years since the RMA was revised to establish the #CommonMonetaryArea - #CMA between #SouthAfrica, #Lesotho, Swaziland (now, #Eswatini) and #Namibia...

On Challenging Ideas

Many are unwilling to challenge established ideas for fear they lack the knowledge necessary to advance opposition.

But truth accommodates the dissident far more than those hoping to maintain the commonly accepted.

2 important points to understand:

1) The power of refutation lies in epistemic asymmetry; it requires far less information to refute a theory than to support it.

2) All attempts to assess a model’s validity must remain agnostic to the tools used to build and promote it.

This means theory exists in a constant state of susceptibility to counter evidence, and that countering does not require familiarity with the language used to defend a model.

Today's Applied Complexity Symposium begins with a panel on Computation and Complex Economies, feat. Rob Axtell, Joshua Epstein, @C4COMPUTATION, Blake LeBaron, John Miller, & @MelMitchell1

(Follow this thread for live coverage all day...)

#complexsystems #economics
4 Principles of Collective #Computation:

1 Ground truth (objective reality)
2 Effective ground truth (what we agree on, whether or not it is accurate)
3 #Information can be collectively encoded in #networks
4 Outputs are a product of collective dynamics

@C4COMPUTATION right now
"I think #economics really needs to adopt a generative framework with agent-based models of cognitively plausible software people...[and] we don't choose to fear."

"Why #SocialMovements Matter", a thread.

It's been a long time since I've written a whole #book in longhand. 1999 to be exact, under the trees in the Botanic Gardens @NBGIreland., 30% off with code RLIJUNE18 Why Social Movements Matter book cover
My handwriting's got worse in the meantime, doing so much more by keyboard and screen. It's still a physically different experience, more thoughtful, more physically creative. There's a different kind of feedback as you see your writing change.
"Why Social Movements Matter" was an unintentional book. @GeoffreyPleyers and the remarkable @lecollege_em at @FondationMSH made it possible for me to spend a month just researching and writing - which is an incredible privilege.

Amazingly, that wasn’t the only bombshell... 1)
Mueller can produce evidence that Paul Manafort lied to fed investigators about his contacts with a Russian Spy and Trump officials, according to sentencing memos filed against Manafort.

Trump likely perjured himself in written answers to the Special Counsel’s questions last month, assuming he had the cover of Manafort’s lies.

Mueller waited to reveal that he had the receipts of Manafort’s lies, giving Trump rope to hang himself.

Okay, here's a quick follow-up thread on chirality in aspects (dexter and sinister, or, left- and right-handedness). For the sake of example, we'll be using the planets Venus and Mars in the context of a relationship chart. #astrology #theory #horary
Remember a couple of things:
- One, the planet that is moving faster is the one initiating connection.
- Two, what determines whether something is dexter or sinister is the observer's position. Dexter aspects go backwards in zodiacal order. Sinister go forward.
I was helped out on this by @RyhanButler who deserves a shoutout; the difference between dexter and sinister aspects is a difference in perceptibility. Dexter aspects tend towards being visible or public, sinister aspects tend towards being hidden or private.

One of the best/worst things about publicly identifying as a scientist on twitter is you get these little gems frequently in your mentions

Yah bro, this sounds totes legit
BTW I get these mentions all the time but they are not usually this aggressive
The usual pseudoscience spam post usually contains a link to some article written by the spammer, and they usually refer to themselves in the third person throughout. The hashtags are normal though.

I suppose we can safely say that now #TheFrighteners have been so successfully and publicly put on a certain sector their combined angst will spew a diarrhoea of spin & warp whilst trying to use THAT VERY THING to generate $£Es Some with automated AdTech software already bought.
2/ Some bought by gormless companies, by mistake, some in full knowledge or partial knowledge of what it could do. It will be interesting as time goes on to see who apparently DIDN'T CARE about the likely instigation of its more negative 'dark' capabilities looking to 'side-step'
3/ or even 'wrong-foot' Irish & EU regulation standards, & possibly law. This too is a kind of #climatechange & #ClimateAction in itself, a would be mammoth untouchable iceberg of 'dominion' & 'control' being melted out into an ocean of citizens' scrutiny & advancement for change
