Parked right outside the main doors of the hospital today was a minibus with the engine running, whose driver was playing on his phone. The fumes were blowing straight into the atrium. When I asked him to turn it off, I saw he was NHS staff. Utter madness.
I wonder how many of the people being treated in that building are ill as a result of air pollution? As usual, he seemed completely baffled by my request, apparently unaware of any connection.
I find this again and again. People aren't hostile when I ask them to turn their engines off. Just confused. When I've talked to them, I've often discovered that the very concept of air pollution is alien to them.
This attests, I feel, to a catastrophic failure by both the government and the media to give the issue the attention it deserves. The same, of course, goes for climate breakdown and other aspects of the environmental crisis.
