‼️.@mod_russia: According to the available reliable information, the Security Service of #Ukraine (SSU) is preparing another provocation to accuse the servicemen of the #Russian Federation of so-called war crimes with the mass destruction of civilians in the #Odessa region.
‼️.@mod_russia: It’s planned to dress one of the SSU units in the uniform of 🇷🇺 servicemen & make a demonstrative shooting of local residents. 🖼 & 🎞 footage of this action w/alleged "🇷🇺 atrocities" will be published by 🇺🇦 and Western news agencies to immediately promote fakes.
‼️.@mod_russia: The upcoming provocation of the #Ukrainian authorities demonstrates their inhumane attitude to the fate of peaceful citizens of #Ukraine and testifies to the complete disregard for all norms of #morality and international humanitarian law.

#Morality is subjective and relative. What is good for one is evil for another. A yardstick is required.

Some would use their holy books in that capacity. That is a terrible idea. Such texts are replete with moral and logical errors.

A thread:
The yardstick must be fair for all. To this end, the Golden Rule is the best yardstick. Treat others the way you would be treated. Place others ahead of yourself and your beliefs. Give the respect to others you would expect.
The antithesis of this, selfishness at the expense of others, is the definition of moral crime. It is the root of all evil. The basis of every evil committed by humanity.

Be proud of who you are.

Anyone who calls a socialist an enemy of ordinary people is an enemy of ordinary people – because socialism is precisely about protecting ordinary people.

Lie about that and what else will you lie about?

Anyone who calls a socialist an enemy of the economy is an enemy of the economy – because any fool knows the economy's real enemies are those who strip away its assets and hoard away its wealth.

1. #COVID19 #Vaccinations #AntiVax #Morality

I think that I have just experienced something which I suspect many have already.

In simple terms, people hiding the fact that they have been exposed to those with confirmed #Coronavirus and have been ill themselves...

...offering that they have tested negative. But, you then discover they're refusing to receive the #vaccine!

In other words, they wish to express their "libertarian" selves, but your views are secondary..
3. #COVID19 #Vaccinations #AntiVax #Morality

...perhaps even your health is secondary to their own "free" views?

Some openly declare they are anti-vaxxers. The stock phrase is that they are now #freethinkers...

Let’s talk about populism.
Populists pretend complex problems have simple answers.
They like things so simple they become stupid.
They adore binary choices.
They demand you ‘take sides’.
#populism #populists #propaganda #Johnson #woke #antiwoke
Populists like division.
They like an enemy.
If no enemy’s handy, they’ll make one.
They like to act the victim, no matter how rich, powerful or privileged they are.
But, by creating ‘an enemy’, victims are precisely what they tend to produce.
#populism #populist #division
Populism appeals to our worse instincts.
It appeals to emotions of hatred, resentment, a tribal ‘us’ and ‘them’.
In today's world we need our better instincts:
Populism doesn’t care about caring. Compassion isn’t on its agenda.

“Violence,” you say, “is the last refuge of the incompetent.”
I can only agree. It’s a great saying. Whose is it?
“Isaac Asimov, I think. I’m not sure.”
The science fiction writer?
I love the guy. He said a lot of great stuff. Have spacesuit. Will travel.

“No, that was Heinlein.”
Ah. Right-wing libertarian Heinlein. I loved a lot of his stuff, too. Starship Troopers. Stranger In A Strange Land. Shame he was a right-wing libertarian.

“He was probably ok with violence, too.”
Shifting back to the topic of violence….
“Shall we?”
Why not? I agree with you.
“With me or Isaac Asimov?”
Either. Both.

"The Muslims Who Inspired Spinoza, Locke & Dafoe"

The wisdom of #IbnTufayl & #IbnRushd in reconciling religion & reason helped the European #Enlightenment.
Today it can help us Muslims, too.

My new piece in @nytopinion - and a teaser for my new book:…
"Hayy ibn Yaqzan," the world’s first philosophical novel by 12th c Muslim polymath #IbnTufayl, made a bestseller in early modern Europe.

It inspired Enlightenment thinkers & Quaker theologians. They were allured by its religious #humanism: a cure to religious violence & bigotry.
“Hayy ibn Yaqzan”s message was bold for its time: man was blessed with divine revelation from above, and with reason & conscience from within.

So, religion was a path to truth, but not the only path.

So, people could be wise & virtuous without religion or a different religion.

Let’s talk about the economy.
You agree: “A logical next step.”
Would you mind if I’m blunt?
“Fire away.”
It’s shit.
“The economy?”
“Well, that is blunt.”

You ponder for a moment, then ask, “Is this another of your enemies?”
The economy?
An enemy to humanity and the biological world?
I hope, by the time this thread is complete, you’ll tell me.

We’re talking about the supply-and-demand, producer/consumer, deregulated/lightly-touched, invisibly-handed, limited-resource-distributing, market-based economy that prevails across much of the world.

“And it’s all entirely shit?”
Well, perhaps I need to qualify that.

Lie about socialism and it’s likely you don’t give a f*** about ordinary people; you’re just a puppet of the establishment, a mouthpiece of the toffs.

1/ I awoke this afternoon with the thought that #Remorse is too often associated with compassion and conscience. Even psychopaths can have remorse...for evil failures or inaction. So, I decided to look it the dictionary. Image
2/ If you noticed that I said "this afternoon" it's because in winter my body clock gets turned on its head. It started after midnight this year as we crossed the time divide into the 1st day. I have not adjusted it w/melatonin, as I'm on a very productive ride at the moment. Image
3/ And, thank you for asking, but, no, I'm not a psychopath. Self-analyzed, mind you. Writers are like that. If it works, work with it. Now, back to #remorse. It's ALL wrong. Well, not all of it. Ex: "He felt no remorse for the murders he had committed."…

1-I have been reading some significant amount of #Jung’s works.

It is incredible, how much his realizations resonated with #Vedic views.

Both sides of Jung’s family had been pastors and #theologians with his father being a minister.

2-Jung naturally grew up dwelling on religious issues.

The #God he imagined was not personal or enlightening,

.....but simply represented the #power of the #universe in all its light, darkness, chance, and infiniteness

#innerwork #karma #time #universe #nature
3-Through dreams he felt led to the conclusion that God actually wants us to think “bad thoughts,”

.....thoughts that go against established #morality, so that we can make our way independently back to God.

At a time when more & more people are facing extended periods of time at home or in isolation because of #CoronavirusOutbreak, you may be interested in a @BBCRadio4 series I made in Sept 2018 called 'Morality in the 21st Century' (h/t producers: Christine Morgan & @dondantini). Image
In this five-part series (and the extended conversations) I explored some of the big moral questions of our time, including the need to move from an 'I' to a 'We' society. All episodes and extended conversations are available here:
As part of the series, I spoke to some of the world's most brilliant thinkers incl. @jordanbpeterson, @noreenahertz, @jean_twenge, @nytdavidbrooks, @JonHaidt, @RobertDPutnam, @mustafasuleymn, Prof Nick Bostrom, @sapinker, @melindagates & Prof Michael Sandel.

In 2017 I was honoured to deliver a @TEDTalks in which I spoke about how we could face the future without fear, together. Faced with the sudden challenge of #Coronovirus, this talk seems all the more pertinent. You can watch or read it in full at Image
In the @TEDTalks, I argued that the simplest way to safeguard the future 'You' was by strengthening the future 'Us' in three dimensions: the 'Us' of #relationship, the 'Us' of #identity and the 'Us' of #responsibility. Never has this seemed more true than in today's world.
I also offered a suggestion of how this could be done. Do a search and replace operation on the text of your mind and wherever you encounter the word "self," substitute the word "other."
