1. I've lived for periods of time in countries with universal health care, and one thing that struck me was how nice it was not to have to live with the background, constant fear that you were only one major health crisis away from bankruptcy.
2. I know many conservative Americans will say that guaranteed entitlements like this make people lazy, make them less responsible for their own wellbeing. But you know what, I don't think those people actually believe that. Here's why...
3. Most people who think universal healthcare will make people weak...have access to good health care. What they're saying is, *other* people having access to this benefit will make *them* lazy, but I deserve to have it and it has no such negative effect on me.
4. That's not an empirical argument about the impact of entitlements on people. That's an "I've got mine" argument, and (in most cases) an argument from a place of perceived racial and/or class superiority.
