"New Left" is such a tell here, a tell that Biden is stuck somewhere in the mid-90s when the Democratic Party was still dealing with the trauma of McGovern's 1972 shellacking. I appreciate much that Biden has done in the past, but he's an anachronism at this point.
I had promised myself that I was going to lay low on the whole run-up to 2020 thing...but I'm just gonna say one thing that I believe is true. It's dumb for Dems to try to win by converting former Trump voters or the handful of "undecided voter" unicorns.
Dems win in 2020 the way they won in 2018, by offering candidates who can fire up and turn out the Dem base comprised predominantly of young people, people of color, & women. Joe "Anita Hill/crime bill/tell me about this thing you call twittering" Biden is not the answer, folks.
I genuinely don't know who might be the answer (and there are surely *many* correct answers)...but I do know that Trump's base is going to turn out in full force to defend their guy. Without an equally powerful turn out on the other side, Trump wins in 2020.
The GOP is going to scream “baby killing, hamburger stealing, open-borders Socialist!!!” at whoever the Dems nominate. There’s no point in trying to neutralize that line of attack. There’s no winning back the voters who that works on.
