Gen X and early hacking was quite commonplace. Not sure why people are so shocked. My teenage years including running scripts to wardial calling card companies to brute force access codes over 1200 baud modems while I was AFK in high school.
The access codes allowed us to chain calls around the world to hide our locations (before the days of VPNs) to probe & penetrate insecure BBSes and find warez.
We built red boxes from Radio Shack dialers by swapping a single crystal.
We opened telco boxes on the street, tapped into the 66 blocks with linemen's handsets and made long distance calls.
We literally climbed into the dumpsters of the local central offices looking for manuals and printouts.
We modified disk drives to ignore copy protection "bad sectors" that early commercial software companies put in place to prevent "copying that floppy".
We also built you all the damn internet and invented most of the tech stack you are using to read this tweet on. You're welcome.
