We are LIVE @theprospect with a long-read from @cd_hooks, on a pivotal moment in Beto O'Rourke's political career: when he supported the makeover and displacement of a low-income neighborhood in El Paso, a plan pushed by his developer tycoon father-in-law. prospect.org/article/beto-v…
The plan envisioned the wholesale replacement of a low-income neighborhood, with nearly two thousand predominantly poorer, older people displaced. Beto voted for it initially, and then continued to support it through a growing backlash. prospect.org/article/beto-v…
This was the marketing presentation created to tout the plan. It depicts "old" El Paso as "dirty" and "lazy" and "new" El Paso as "educated" and "entrepreneurial."
The plan eventually busted, though the city is still trying to build the arena. Some local residents in the line of fire haven't forgotten. "We trusted in Beto, and he gave us away on a silver platter." prospect.org/article/beto-v…
This is a really immersive, nuanced look into this moment in Beto's career, including a long interview between @cd_hooks and Beto (who he's covered for years). It's an important part of his record. prospect.org/article/beto-v…
We're going to continue in this tradition of deep-dive, enterprise journalism at @theprospect. Keep watching this space! prospect.org
