CA high speed rail had to fight through a mountain of opposition which raised costs (I think the management was less a factor that all the BS it had to put up with). But its abandonment is a climate tragedy.

This is an affordable housing defeat for a governor who claims to champion it, too. You could have had reasonable commutes 100 miles from major city centers, allowing for development in those pockets.
Newsom is committing to completing the Bakersfield to Merced section, which could be the worst possible outcome - the ridership will be miniscule (who needs to get between those places regularly) and it will reinforce the alleged costliness of HSR
In the end the failure of HSR is an example of how preference intensity doomed a project that was initially popular enough for the state to pass $10 billion in bonds.
