Counterpoint, and fair. But my argument isn't that it is literally impossible to succeed without a BA; only that it is becoming more and more difficult.
Especially for those who don't have what it takes to be entrepreneurs, which I, for one, sure as hell don't.
Though I'll also say that I see a few encouraging signs in the other directions such as the substitution of coding camps for CS degrees.

I don't know if other Americans have this trouble when they deal with Europeans but--I know my liberal use of exclamation points makes me look, to them, faintly mad, and yet cannot stop myself from sprinkling them in, because the email looks so bare and cold without them.
All right, now it appears I have to defend profligate American use of exclamation points and emoticons.

Which requires us to detour into another question: why do Americans smile so damn much?
It turns out there is an answer to this question: societies with a lot of immigration, particularly linguistically diverse immigration, smile more than societies that have relatively little.

Not because they don't matter--they are, as the Catholic Church used to say, "sins that cry out to heaven for vengeance". And yes, I understand the arguments against this proposition, which may well not work.
But the truth is that all the attention we pay to these crimes is a big part of the reason they keep happening. The shooters, having achieved nothing of note, want fame. They achieve it in infamy.

It's a little late in the day to be starting a tweet storm on my college admissions column, but what the hey, it's spring outside, and I'm inside waiting for an edit, and I'm feeling a bit frisky.

But since it's spring, and many of you are feeling a bit frisky yourselves, no doubt, I'll limit myself to a couple of points.

First, I have never had so many commenters read a column completely backwards.
Apparently, many people took the column as an extended argument that the real people who were victimized by this were good, hardworking affluent parents who didn't cheat, and poor, poor them.

Red Pills and Cultic Behaviours: A Thread
One i've been wanting to make for a while, using Singer's (1996) six conditions as a framework. with a few little additions to the structure of certain areas of the 'manosphere'.
Honestly there's going ot be a little bit of conjecture in this thread, purely because I can't be bothered finding any niche research into the points i'll be making. A lot will be based on my experiences with the groups.
So I suppose to many of you it isn't new information that the 'red pill' community, and by extension the 'manosphere', has certain cult like qualities to it. I just wanted to put some research on top of those suspicions.

Gonna jump in with the (brief) version of the economic corollary: the availability and normalization of contraception also creates a norm within society in which fecundity and, specifically, the ways in which women bear specific burdens of human fecundity, are papered over
If contraception is the norm, then it becomes easier to (mentally) separate the relationship between sex and babies. Let’s look at how this plays out for education: sex is available, the idea that it is “safe” is taken for granted, but again - statistically-
... there’s roughly a 12 percent chance, combined, for pill and condom, in an unintended pregnancy - per year. That compounds, and you’re left with a pretty high chance over an undergrad career for a “surprise”.
However... there’s still the cultural bias - really expectation -

Where does whiteness come from? A thread.

“White” makes its first appearance in a 1681 legal document from the Maryland colony’s general assembly. Previously, folks mainly relied on categories such as ethnicity, nationality, and religion to categorize each other. 1/
Physical differences were noted, but they weren’t indicative of unique human categories. 2/
By the late 1600s, it was becoming more difficult for European settlers to obtain jobs. Survival rates had increased. Tenants and indentured servants were finishing up their terms and moving into the plots of land guaranteed to them by the stipulations of their contracts. 3/

1/ Twitter as a platform for expression imposes its own context on perception, affecting the quality and direction of one's thought.
2/ Uniformity of expression and conformity to the standard are the bane of independent thinking.

Look no further than the majority of popular accounts for evidence. See the curse of popularity in how the message is contextually designed and delivered.
3/ It is relatively easy to discern the true motivation of any given account by looking at their output.

The more it resembles the norm in terms of format, tone, context, and structure of ideas, the more you are looking at an individual who thinks and writes for Twitter.

Tutorial on how to make a map using QGIS. I'll turn @SenhorRaposa's 2000 Vermont town data into a map showing by how much Gore outran Senator Jeffords (or vice versa) in every town.
Step 1: Download QGIS for your computer, which is available here:
qgis.org/en/site/foruse…
You'll also need some of Census' Tiger/Line County and County Sub shapefiles. The main download page for those is here:
census.gov/cgi-bin/geo/sh…

A direct link to the 2017 VT county sub shapefile is here: ftp://ftp2.census.gov/geo/tiger/TIGER2017/COUSUB/tl_2017_50_cousub.zip
I can't find a 2017 County file by state, so we'll use the 2009 verison here:
